Rear Inner arches repair - 99 UK Impreza 2000 turbo spec

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site and looking for some help on how best to address the rear inner arch issue which seems to plague the older Imprezas. 

Most of my inner arch has been reclaimed by nature, heading upwards to the turret top of the rear suspension.

Assuming that several members on here have experienced this problem; is there anyone who can provide guidance as to the best approach to repairing these,  eg., is it necessary to remove suspension, petrol tank, etc?

Any help on this would be gratefully received.

If its totally goosed, then best /easiest option would nbe to buy new rear quarters and have the body shop cut out evrything and weld in the new, not cheap but the only way to be sure youve got it all and done a prroper job.

@savagebulldogs knows someone who has had this done and may still have some pics

Thanks for the reply. It's fairly goosed but I think I might get it in time before that's necessary (I'll see what my welder says).

The car does need new outer arches welded in also (totally gone) so it might come to it that I need new quarters.

I didn't see anything in the how-to guide section so I thought I'd ask you guys anyway.

Unfortunately most of robs pics were on photo bucket but his way of getting rid of the tin worm was probably the best but most expensive I've seen .

 

He has all his work done by Roger Clarke and had new inner and outer rear 1/4's imported from Japan. Thorough job but a £8k price tag

 

Stants Probably recommended the most used route but if your welder can make the inner arches and turrets solid ?.

 

Have a look for "automotive repair panels " page on Facebook.

Ray sells good quality gc8 outer rear repair panels and sills at sensible prices .

 

Let us know how you get on and best of luck with saving another classic

Impartsb46 on ebay often have body panels rear quarters etc for sale, just had a look there nothing for classics at the mo but may be worth mailing them to see if they have them or can get them

Looks like a clean unabused example

 

Didn't want to scare you off with robs £8k price tag, as you could probably get it done for less than a 1/4 of that price

 

Pending how bad the inner arches are, whether you get the whole car sprayed or just the rear 1/4's and who you use to get the work done .

Yeah I decided to go for this one (knowing about the rot) as the previous owner had it for 12 years. Totally standard car apart from the back box. The car is getting treated to a full respray as the paintwork is worse than the pictures show.

I'll likely get around to a full service first. As I've always been a Toyota and Honda man, I know nothing about Subarus. Can you point me to a thread that contains all required servicing information  (what belts, oilso & their specification, filters etc to use) please?

No real thread on parts to use but I'm sure you've come across www.importcarparts.co.uk ?

Best place for oem stuff,

I'd use genuine subaru oil filter, blue ones are about 9 quid while the black ones (supposedly better) about £12.00

Air filters most of us use cosworth dry foam type, saves the maf form getting oily.

Oils any good fully synth will be fine again most of us use Miller's

10-40 is recommended for classics (unmodded)

 

As for the belts you can get full kits from ipc again

The gates/blueprint belts are good depends on what price range your happy with

Hi I just brought a 2002 Impreza WRX wagon two weeks ago. It is currently in the garage having a full service  at 900 quid! The sparks plugs broke in half on the mech when he took them out and the fuel filter looked like sludgeville and whilst in there, they have found EXTENSIVE rusting to the rear wheel undersides where the shocks sit in - have just had it welded last week and will get it back tomorrow and the bill for just the welding - which the garage tells me is as good as when it came out of the show room - bill will be 800 for just the welding job! 

The garage completely stripped out the rear interior and I apparently have completely new rear wheel arches. Got to love the classic cars though as so many have trashed/smashed/scrapped. I won't be modîng mine up mind not after the garage bill anyway! Just one thing left to do to it and that's get rid of the pink stars badge on its front and the pink STI badge on the back.

Ouch and ouch again. Talk about getting hammered. I've a feeling I might end up getting nailed like that too, despite trying to allow for it in the price :-(

Just got my scoob back late yesterday, I asked the garage to take pic of the welding job before and after to be able to post on here so you can all see just how BAD it was! The bill made the hubby gasp too £2000!!!! Was a full service to with all filters plus drained ALL fluids (brakes, power steering, trans etc) and replaced. I shall be running scoob forever now never having another car now lol.
