using a lot of oil
ahh you've got to laugh, or I'd cry! They will have had the car 3 weeks on Tuesday. Todays excuse was they are waiting for head gaskets that they had to order from America! Going to try and speak to citizens advice bureau tomorrow. Proper mickey take now.

They did decide on Friday that it was burning oil. Engine coming back out and getting stripped as they don't know where from!

doesn't sound too good then. If that is what's maybe happening would it not be smoking from exhaust?

you've lost me thereTidgy? Done about 2000 miles since gaskets replaced. Nothing mentioned about any running in or anything when I picked it back up!

Definitely not smoking. Could've been an issue from before as I only had the car a fortnight before it went back for head gaskets! Couldn't say exactly what was done on rebuild as only spoke to them on phone. New gaskets, timing belt, tensioners. He said it was stripped down and rebuilt but just have his word for that.

only done 62000, had head gaskets replaced on 60000 under warranty. They still have the car at moment. See what they have to say later but getting ready for a fight.

can see them trying to fob me off!! They have phoned and said there's no leak. Which I knew. Now he's already saying a litre of oil per 500 miles is acceptable without investigating further. Seen on this site that 1000 miles per litre is what should be expected minimum.

Thanks for replies. Car going back tomorrow. Their mechanic doesn't believe it either, especially as its not smoking!

using a lot of oil
Hi all, hope I'm posting in the right place? I have posted previously about my first Subaru wrx 2.5 07 plate. Bought end of September. Only had it 2 weeks before it went back for head gaskets!! Got it back after 2 weeks and a supposed full rebuild. Okay until December when just routinely decided to check oil and the dipstick was dry! Took almost full 5 litres to get back to full mark, all this after only doing about 500 miles since the rebuild. Phoned the garage back up and to be fair they were okay about it and said to take car back. Now it is a bit of a trek back to where I bought it so asked if I could take it to a local garage for their opinion as its still under warranty. Actually took it to a couple. Both said fill it up and run it keeping an eye on oil level. One said they may have forgot to fill it up when they fixed it. Find that hard to believe. Anyway, been checking it regularly and noticed it going down again, to the point where its nearly all gone after only 500 miles. There is no visible oil leak or patch where its parked and no smoke coming from exhaust. What should the garage be checking for?? Love the car but is it time to give the keys back and buy another.

Finally got the car back after 18days!! Proper job apparently. Both head gaskets changed, new belt and tensioners etc. Temperature gauge still sits just above two thirds. Mentioned that to garage again and told that's fine. Had a decent run out in it yesterday, about 150 mile round trip. Runs okay, but on more than one occasion the car started stinking really bad, mix of burning smell and sulphur. Had to open the windows!! Couple of mins and it disappeared. Probably happened 4 times on the journey! Is that relevant to any work that's been done or is the car still knackered?!

Have refused to pay for belt and asked for a full breakdown of what they are changing/checking. Waiting for reply.

Could anybody help me out sharpish with regards to what exactly needs replacing/checking when head gasket cracks? Just had garage back on phone and they want me to pay £70 for new cambelt while cars in bits! I've said I thought it should be included along with new tensioners and a few other bits and bobs. Could do with some help on the other bits and bobs so I don't look a !Removed! when I speak to him later! Think the sticking point could be between what needs to be done, and what should be done.

It's rac warranty which covers up to £1000, this isn't getting done on the warranty though it's the garage that's sorting it through a company called turbo technics I think he said.

That should've said 14 months

Not so good news anymore! Was concerned when I didn't get the call to pick it up yesterday. Just got off the phone and worst fear confirmed. Head gasket!! He said head doesn't need skimming as it's just the gasket that's cracked. Thought that was standard? I could be wrong! I now wonder whether I want the car back, last car I had head gasket replaced on it went again 1 month later. Could've been a bad job. He's assured me the car will be better than ever?! Gutted.
