Buying 2006 Forster XT - already Impreza owner, advice?
annascoob replied to annascoob's topic in General Subaru Chat
Thanks very much for the specific information. We got the Forester for 2500 and fairly tidy. -
I have converted the husband to be a Subaru lover! So we shall be become a two Subaru household. I own Subaru Impreza 2002 WRX and we are looking at a Forester 2006 XT with all weather pack 115,000 on the clock, two owners from new from a dealer which has been serviced rigorously since owner brought from same dealer in 2006 so engine all good we should hope. Exterior doesn't sppear to have usual Subaru rust issues (been stung there before with the Impreza). The exterior paintwork has some scratches and bumpers need new ones as been reversed into something at some point (hopefully dealership who have one scrapping has both bumpers and just need to get painted) not surprised because the village that the dealership is in has streets only just wide enough for a horse and cart! The issue I am asking about is that the previous owner did not "get on" with the alarm so the dealership disarmed it! Dealership said that the immobiliser is in the key itself and the push button on key fob was just for the alarm (they have stuffed some kind of gunk in the hole where the push button was), they are now telling us that the alarm "ECU" is effectively knackered ? (again they think they can take one off they are scrapping and put it in) - there isn't only one key. So how easy/difficult would it be to get new alarm system put on or just get another key/fob for remote central locking for it? Any Forester general foibles to look out for? (We know the usual Subaru ones from current Impreza)

Update on exhaust system. We brought and had fitted the Cobra 3" sports cat from turbo to tailpipe with NO remapping and what a lovely purr she has now! We have had issues with the engine management light coming on at speeds over 50mph (doesn't happen often because Devon road infrastructure so pants you rarely get over 40mph!) ECU thinks it's not getting enough oxygen but that has been sorted with an "elbow" cheat in the pipe so the ECU thinks it's ok now! Possiblely looking at a walbro fuel pump upgrade and then remapping; however may be some time yet as we are going to be a 2 Subaru household, I have converted he husband lol and we looked at an 2006 Forestor XT last week which he is buying! So now will be asking about Forestors too! -

No don't "need" the whole lot only centre and back but thought seeing as doing most may as well do it all and stainless should last! So that's why looking at downpipe too ; but also the quandary of where the cat is? As if not in centre, or back then needs to be in the downpipe hence looking at that - my garage mech is a by the book type too so would not "play with emissions" and being Devon not to much choice of garages either. This is the system we are looking at: http://cobrasport.com/index.php/cobra-sport-exhaust/subaru/impreza/subaru-impreza-wrx-sti-107/road/subaru-impreza-turbo-turbo-back-system-with-sports-cat-resonater.html Should be a link there for Cobra sports exhaust turbo back sports cat and res. Seminol89 - is that JDM as in the garage (which is situated in Devon, highly unlikely or JDM American brand? -

Savage - I did not look in the description on their pages! Doh - it does actually state they are all Saturn pipework! It seems that if you get from Cobra themselves they are full blown retail; however just about everyone else selling them like piranha, roadrunners, scooby world, japspeed etc all able to take at least 10% off????????? Still for down pipe alone it's at least 300 then with centre and back at least 350 so give or take! -

Savage bulldogs - seems the brushed pipework Cobra is no longer available from piranha on eBay but searching elsewhere to see if anyone else has it - I think because we are looking for the whole system from turbo to tailpipe (downpipe, centre res and back box) that's it's still going to come in at around £700-£800 unless we go second hand and you never know what people have done to those. -

Stants - oh dear re the sports cat; however since the recent turbo inlet pipe incident and £300 quid lighter in the pocket we have to wait a while but it seems that sports cats are very fickle things! After getting scoob back last night at the eleventh hour before the road trip, she's a totally different animal now! The power is massively increased (unsurprisingly!) I went straight out onto the Atlantic highway to "test her out" and I am absolutely gobsmacked at the difference in power. Then I got home and immediately sent the hubby out in her - he came back saying "is it the the same car?" With a massive smile on his face and stating we could become a 2 Subaru household!!! Well my hubby is not a petrol head like me (he happily drives Mitsubishi colt automatic!) so shocker!!!!!! -
Big shout out to Nippon spares in derby (import car parts specialists) as they shipped the part to Devon for nothing on a 9am delivery! Should be getting scoob back this afternoon - plus a large hole in the husbands wallet for diagnostics and labor. Then off on road trip up the M5 to the midlands on Sunday so will get to test scoob out on flat bendless roads (well compared with deepest Devon anyway) ooooooo dual carriage ways too! Infurstructure down here in terrible at times.

No worries all good chat re exhaust though! I will be looking into the piranha products - but the cobra exhaust is definitely what we are going to get now. Nothing else comes close to the lovely throaty boxer rumble! Thanks for the good debate and research. My poor scooby back in the garage yesterday and turns out whoever touched the turbo on it last (only had it for 6 weeks) shoved the induction intake turbo pipe INSIDE the turbo! No wonder lacking in power and sending engine management light into "strobe" mode flashing on and off so much! -
On Impreza WRX 2002 wagon, Any help please - 4 days ago engine management light came on and went off when driving steady but short distance stuck! Took to garage they said all fine it was rear diff pressure monitor and all cleared down nothing wrong £100 quid lighter! Today engine management light came on again and stayed on and we have since brought an OBD II reader and it came up as P1086 - Tumble generator valve #2 (LH) position sensor circuit low input. Taken it straight to garage this am. Have done some internet research and seems it may be the tumble valve sensor knackered or valve itself stuck. I am supposed to be doing a road trip this weekend it's now Wednesday and wondering if anyone else has had this fault, what was it and how long did it take to sort it out?

Thanks all for advice; we have a custom joint in Barnstaple only 20 miles away (but bloke only there 2 days a week lol). I have had a quote from them it's a POWERFLOW??? Connected to top gear tuning seem to be a national outfit they say £450 for full stainless system for 3" - now full cobra system comes in at £890??? having watched a few you tube vids for scooby exhausts now - the throaty boxer rumble seems to be best on the cobra system. I have come across some other brands now too like Haywood & Scott and Inveda, they like the powerflow seems to be quite high pitched but don't know if that's the skill of the camera man though lol at the moment the Cobra system is winning out right - so may just ignore my garage guy and do it anyway - one thing he did say was that the sports cat on any system only lasts one MOT worth before having to be replaced?? Any experience of that anyone? -

Haha based in north Devon - so decent custom joint would mean a road trip somewhere. Everything in Devon is few and far between! Would love a custom job, will try to research but I am betting nearest will be exeter or Plymouth which both are 2 ish hour drives mostly because of the twisty roads mind -

I would also add that I am a bit old school and would love a cherry bomb - however that's a pipe dream if I can't find the basics! As cherry bomb only comes as tail/box end no other exhaust system parts! -

Right - brought Impreza WRX wagon 2002 bug eye 6 weeks ish ago with view of running it forever as an enthusiast. It has a stock exhaust on it which is about to fall off etc so have been looking for a full (from turbo to tailpipe) stainless steel system that will be on it till the car dies or I do. We run it as a road car so it has to be able to pass MOT so decat not an option and I love the boxer rumble and want to hear it! So we have looked at cobra turbo back with sports cat and non res - my garage man that does the work says they are not reliable and he has had them brake etc: (they come with a lifetime garuntee so does that matter?) apexi - state they don't make for 2002 uk spec Impreza wrx Miltek don't appear to have cat options only decat i am losing the will trying to find a nice sounding, fitting and legal exhaust system 😳 any advice please? -
Just brought Impreza wrx wagon 2002

Hey great advice - though being Devon things are few and far between! The nearest shell station is 25 miles away at Okehampton! Or 35 miles near Exeter! So have to make do with BP 97 , Texaco 97 or Esso 98. The hubby and I have discussed the exhaust issue - ours has been "bodged" up in places to get it through its last MOT before we brought it. Because of the extensive work and cost of the work just done, we are umming and are ing weather to do it until we have to next year as so far the stainless option has not come in cheaper than £800; husband also just questioned weather the lifetime garuntee is worth the mileage left on the car - I said yes considering others on here have well over 200 thou on the clock and our scoob only 126 thou (also how much he just paid for the rest of the work!). Also just had quote to do comestic work on rust bubbling on paintwork and refurb alloys comes in at £500 ish so think exhaust will have to wait till MOT demands it's done cause of emissions or its blowing like a horn! As for tires - it came with a set of parelli winters on it and was narked that hubby agreed with garage to change for "normal" unbranded as there was loads of life left in them! But garage owner told hubby that the car would slip and slide in the rain with them on - I wasn't happy when got home and he told me that one, previously we had a Land Rover discovery mk3 which was constantly in "limp home mode" (hence selling the darn thing) but when it wasn't it rolled and aquaplained across the roads which I hated and our scooby sticks to the road like glue compared to that! I drove to meet friends near Launceston (80 mile round trip) yesterday on the old A361 and my scoob ate fuel but really enjoyed the driving, I have fallen in love with driving again after buying this money pit lol -

Just got my scoob back late yesterday, I asked the garage to take pic of the welding job before and after to be able to post on here so you can all see just how BAD it was! The bill made the hubby gasp too £2000!!!! Was a full service to with all filters plus drained ALL fluids (brakes, power steering, trans etc) and replaced. I shall be running scoob forever now never having another car now lol. -

Yay Scoobs back from the garage yesterday late and after "feeding time at the zoo" (teatime for husband, child and animals) we all piled into the car and took a long road trip from Bideford to Bude on the Atlantic Highway A39, loads of twists and turns little straights to get the turbo opened up - but also lots of "grockells" or holidaymakers that are not used to the narrow/bendy roads here in Devon! Love the holidymakers as it Devons bread and butter! such a lovely drive in the scoob, not top performance as can't open her up on those roads but certainly will be taking her on a longer run, have to take her to Dulverton to our Local (if you can call 75 miles away local) dealership for the recent recall from Subaru on front suspension and that is a good Road for testing out the turbo and has crawling lanes for HGV's and caravans etc! Have some bodywork issues to sort out like the rust bubbles on paintwork above the rear wheel arches (must have crept from the hardcore rust underneath) and a few dents/scratches on the roof from the last owners use for skis, snowboards and surfboards My scoob has 125,000 on the clock and the previous owner took into the alps (he had rad go on him in the mountains and had to negotiate in French to get it done) i plan to run her forever now especially after the garage bill of £2000, I asked the garage to take pictures of the welding work being done so I could post on here with it! If there are other Subaru owners in north Devon I would love to hear from you -
Hi am new obviously; just brought my first scooby - Impreza WRX wagon 2002. Always wanted a WRX but could never afford it. Couldn't have a saloon now as child and dogs wouldn't fit! So let my heart rule my head and brought wagon from private seller; Already costing mega money! lol it's currently in the local garage having full service (sparks broke in half on mech when he checked them and fuel filter looked like sludgeville!) all oils drained and replaced and apparently the vacuum pipe was off the turbo, worst bit being the EXTENSIVE rust under rear wheel arches which they have just stripped out enire rear interior to replace and tell me that it's as good as it came out of the showroom now! The bill is scary too! I am hoping to "run it forever now" !!!!!!!

Hi I just brought a 2002 Impreza WRX wagon two weeks ago. It is currently in the garage having a full service at 900 quid! The sparks plugs broke in half on the mech when he took them out and the fuel filter looked like sludgeville and whilst in there, they have found EXTENSIVE rusting to the rear wheel undersides where the shocks sit in - have just had it welded last week and will get it back tomorrow and the bill for just the welding - which the garage tells me is as good as when it came out of the show room - bill will be 800 for just the welding job! The garage completely stripped out the rear interior and I apparently have completely new rear wheel arches. Got to love the classic cars though as so many have trashed/smashed/scrapped. I won't be modîng mine up mind not after the garage bill anyway! Just one thing left to do to it and that's get rid of the pink stars badge on its front and the pink STI badge on the back. Good luck with your classic
