Can a throttle position sensor be cleaned ?

Hi I was wondering if a throttle sensor ever required  cleaning, I ask as mine seems to be throwing up a engine check light ?. When my check engine light comes on if I rev engine it then goes out . I have also noticed that sometimes it is difficult to control low revs between 600-1000 rpm. Wondered if you remove sensor and cleaned it could this cure the issue. Other than this the car is running fine. Thanks  .
