A motorist who ploughed into a group of men as they crossed the street in a revenge attack has been jailed for 20 years.

Horrifying footage shows the moment the men were sent sprawling as Aqab Hussain, 21, mowed them down after a minor spat outside a club.

The CCTV clip shows three members of the group suddenly freeze in terror as Hussain's car drives the wrong way down a city centre street.

Hussain's Vauxhall Corsa then hits partially-sighted Michael Ward and two of his friends, Paul Hulme and Martin Harris, in Manchester.

Mr Ward a third carried down the street on the car bonnet for about 100 metres before Hussain swerved to dislodge him from the bonnet.

The 28-year-old was injured so severely that he was in intensive care for twenty days and spent around four months in a high dependency unit.

Meanwhile, Mr Hulme suffered fractures to his right leg after being 'flipped into the air', while Mr Harris suffered only minor injuries.

A fourth member of Mr Ward's group, Thomas Mallanphy, narrowly escaped injury after stepping back from the road, Mr Hussain's Manchester Crown Court trial heard.

Hussain made no attempt to stop the car and fled the UK three days after the incident.

He was arrested just over seven weeks later by police officers at Manchester Airport as he returned from abroad.

Hussain, of Rusholme, was today jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of found counts of attempted murder.

The court heard the incident, on John Dalton Street in Manchester city centre in the early hours of August 21 last year, started in "horseplay" between the two groups of men over a baseball cap.

But it LED to a fight and Hussain jumped in his car to take revenge.

Passing sentence Judge Robert Atherton said it was fortunate Mr Ward did not die in the attack.

"He was very, very seriously injured. He will never recover, he will never be able to enjoy his family," the judge said.

"One witness described the scene as being like someone bowling at skittles and people being flung like skittles to the side.

"Why you did it is extremely difficult to understand."

Rachael Pavion, District Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service North West, said: "Aqab Hussain used his car as a weapon, he sought revenge by driving at speed deliberately at the four men with a clear intention to kill.

"After he struck his victims, he drove from the scene and showed complete disregard for the harm he had caused.

"One of the men received life changing head injuries; he was catapulted into the air after being carried on the bonnet of the vehicle for several metres, the two other men sustained substantial injuries.

"Eye witnesses, together with CCTV and forensic evidence helped to prove that he was the driver of the vehicle that had collided with the victims.

"The Crown Prosecution Service has worked closely alongside the police to piece all the evidence together and present a strong case to the jury, who have today accepted the prosecution case and delivered a guilty verdict.

"As a result, Aqab Hussain has been brought to justice and he must now take responsibility for his dangerous actions."

Outside court, Mr Ward's wife of seven years, Mary Rose Ward, said: "What he did to my husband, you wouldn't do it to an animal really would you?

"My husband was never a violent person and I am not a violent person but he should not have done what he did."

Mrs Ward said her blind husband was still receiving full-time care in a rehabilitation centre but that she cares for him during the day before going home to look after their children, daughters Montana, six, and Crystal, aged four, and son Michael, aged one.

"He can't play with the kids or anything. He can't talk, he can't walk, he can't wash himself or feed himself, he has no memory. I'm his wife and I will care for him for the rest of my life because he is my husband.

"He knows he was in a car accident and I try and explain but he doesn't really understand."

She said their six-year-old had asked her: "Why did they do it to my daddy?" and that their other baby was only two months old when her husband was attacked.

"I have to try and get on with my life. You've got to cope, don't you, and take things day by day.

"My husband will have to stick this for the rest of his life and he (Hussain) will be out in 20 years."
