Make sure its service history is up to date Depending on age, front hubs, drop links and bushes can be starting to wear Pattern parts are your best friend .. Front hub £100 Drop links £20 The biggy tho is the zorst that fabled Y piece can sting you for anywhere between £0 and £700 !!! If you can find a pattern part that fits is an openended chequebook.... OEM its £700 for the Y pipe - A full Stainless cat back can be had for the same price lol Fuel is the biggest expense ... expect to get abit 250 - 300 miles on average every fill up at £60 a go Yes they are quick, but need a good prod to get them going. from standing they can be rapid, but kicking down at low speeds feels like an age before the box drops cogs ... the manual mode is better but you need to get your head round the way the shift works - Forwards is faster backwards is slower lol Mart

Managed 330 using a mix of Mway, A roads and the mist hilliest section of the mendips and somerset going... However !!!! BIG HEADS UP!!!!! The onboard av fuel display stops calculating and dispalying a range at 20 miles remaining!!! !Removed! big eeek sesion as I'd just driven past a fuel stop at 119 per litre and was heading for the nearby ASDA .. Nearbly lol, a further 7 miles according to the sat nav! Needle planted firmly in the red, no reading on the digi display other than - - - and an odo display showing 330 miles Made it and it cost me £64 to fill the tank, as opposed to my normal £58 - £62 Mart

Well i managed to do it ... painfully, Not impressed... with the output of the bulbs i replaced them with. i wanted a white sidelight, i got a white spotlight due to the design of the current bulb. Waiting for some replacements off the bay Mart

It may, but for £40 you can have a whole unit for spares, it may work out of the box, (assuming the code is correct), or you may need to try a resolder job .. Mart

I guess its also a Left hooker.. Please can you give us the details of the mofdel code from the VIn label inside the door. looks like the panel for the radio / CD is lown. it may be a loose connector / plug to the display assembly, however it may be somthing more hidden ( transistor / ic failure)) NoT sure (I can't remember from when i stripped mine out) if the info panel is a seperate item to the unit itself, I think it may be .. in which case there are several units on the bay at the moment ..use as part doners but the fequency part of the radio display may be wrong Or convert to UK spec, (Although the radio may not work) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUBARU-LEGACY-SINGLE-CD-RADIO-PLAYER-HEATER-CONTROLS-/181787759886?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a5365150e Mart

Expensive Ride home On A Relay Truck !

What size engine? worst case. Bearings, crankshaft, rods , the odd piston and a few valves (12+) and mebbee a camshaft or two ... best case new shells and and regrind... either way thats the symptoms.. what caused it is the more critical one .. when was it last serviced? Re your oil filter, they dont have lights, as they normally have a pressure valve built into the filter.. so if the filter gets blocked, it allows the oil to circulate effectivly bypassing the filter. The downside is any contaminants are then going back into the engine That said, if its blocked that bad, then the cause is liable to be somthing major Mart -
In General, the H6 is a good unit, Chain driven so no cambelt to change, no swirly pot flappy maladies that affects the 2.0 & 2.5 units Front hubs can go from 100K but are readily available and easy to do cost about £140 Servicing is every 10K i believe. its the usual stuff, oils / filters gearbox fluid needs a change every 30k. I believe its in the £200 region to have done Fuel economy is:- If your buying the car for a daily round town and short commute, then you will be on first name terms with the local garages anywhere between 9-20 mpg (tank range 240 -260) For occasional use and long journeys you can get 30+mpg tank range 330+ Off road is good, but its not a land rover, and it is on road tyres Pull from the lights is fun, and will often catch other unsuspecting vehicles napping ;) Mart

Juts filled up and had a run out in the Outback today ... Cruising at a nice steady 60mph.. managed to get the average MPG to 30.6, but it settled to 30.3 by the time returned home ... I covered 130 miles and it still say i still have a range of 280 miles and well over 3/4 of a tank remaining Mart :)

TBH, your not going to se any significant gains from a NA engine. There set up to run very efficiently. I use this stuff in my H6 http://www.millersoils.co.uk/automotive/tds-automotive.asp?prodsegmentID=135§or=Car far cheaper than using vmaxplusboosty stuff Mart

Well that yearly drudge of trawling websites, hard sell phone calls, and general willy waving is upon me lol . Started with the renewal, £100 up on last year with a must have premium of £305 lol Then came the hard sell phone calls, we can put you in touch with cheap deals, (they cant !) In the end i told them not to waste my time lol One even had the cheek to tell me it was impossible to get below £200 fully comp... Well i did the impossible £150 fully comp :) Happy bunny me :)

mart360 replied to Pinchcliff's topic in Subaru Outback Club
You need to put a trim removal tool (thin piece of plastic) between the box and the dash panel (where the seam around the part is effectivly) one you pop the tool in you can pull the unit out ... 2 conections normally light & multi plug Mart -

Are you refering to the one in the dash - which does your mileage etc? Or the one in the centre cubby which covers temp etc The one in the dash, usually gives an error display when defective The one in the centre cubby is a known failure item. One cause is a dry joint on resistor 19, resoldering can sometimes cure it .... They turn up on the bay, but can cost almost as much as a replacement. There is a workaround if you do a search, in the forum i found a way to use a non uk spec part :) I also believe the guy who repairs SAAB SID displays has now started to cover this display too .... if i recall it was between £50-100 for the SAAB SID unit so may be a comparible price Mart -
Excessive fuel consumption and lumpy when restarted warm
mart360 replied to mickcox's topic in Subaru Outback Club
Right from what i can work out .. You dont have a MAF, but a combination of intake air temp sensor & MAP (manifold absolute prressure) sensor. Coupled with the engine temp sensor give the 3 parameters for controlling the fuel ratio looking at the picture the inlet air temp is easy to spot. the MAP though can be several places, depending on what model / country looking at my worksop manual for the 2003 its either in the manifold or throttle body. The one that looks like the right one i have circled, although i could be wrong. I cant see where your engine temp sensor is located , as the manual is vague, ... its usuially just a plug going directly into the engine block Not sure how you clean an air temp sensor, (normally its a MAF) My map sensor, i just sprayed with brake cleaner and shook off excess and left to dry. Engine temp sensor is just a replacement in terms of replacement prices ... Main dealer guestimates - £100+ for the MAP £100+ for the air sensor & £50 for the engine temps sensor I cant find anything listed for your car in terms of Pattern parts here in blighty You need to get it to a garage for some diagnositicery Mart -

I need a wide view shot of your engine bay please Mick, Looking at the workshop manual for the 2003 outback / leggy 2.0 Type 1 has an MAP / temp sensor mounted in the inlet manifold, with an airbox feeding direct. 2.0 Type 2 has a side mounted airbox and a maf built in looking at your picture, you have the type one airbox, but no MAP sensor in the manifold... hence my request for some more pics mart
