  1. Thanks for that, will have to get out and have a look, the engine bay is very full (of engine) so seeing anything is a task.
  2. Doing the cambelt/water pump. But was contemplating changing the tank in question as well as mine is rusty.
  3. May sound stupid but........which one does the coolant go in then? I have never seen a separate header tank before.
  4. Can someone please tell me what the small tank is in the engine bay on a WRX just below the turbo to the left of the main block. It has a 'never open when hot' it is made from metal and has 3 pipes going into it. Mine is a bit rusty so was looking to get a replacement.
  5. Oh and just a quick question people keep referring to the 'up' pipe, what does that do and where exactly is it?
  6. It seems standard, there's no fancy pipes or upgraded discs or calipers. Its only had 2 previous owners the person I got it off, got it in 2007. I'll probably print this 'thread' off and take it to the relevant garage. With regards to the cambelt, like I said the previous owner has had it for around 90,000 miles and said he has never had it done.
  7. Thanks for that I have seen some gates ones on ebay and I will do the tensioners/pulleys as its been so long. I will do the water pump at the same time. With regards to the smoke, its definitely not steam. The engine temperature is fine. I will keep an eye on the levels. The previous owner had the engine induction pipe between turbo and the air filter replaced, It was done a while ago but I believe that is the area of the engine where the smoke comes from.

I have acquired a 2001 Impreza WRX but there a couple of problems, the first being when it is driven at slowish speeds (30mph) for around 5-10 mins when you stop the car some kind of smoke comes from the engine (it comes from the left hand corner as you stand looking at the front of the car). I looks/smells like something is burning but it only does it at slow speeds (I stopped to get fuel and you could see the smoke coming out of the bonnet) There isn't loads of smoke, but enough to know there's a problem. At high speeds (50mph+) it seems not to happen because the air intake seemingly is sufficient to keep whatever it is cool. Any ideas would be greatly received. And finally it has done well over 120k but doesn't seem to have had its cambelt changed EVER, so my question is, is there a good make of belt kit to buy as Halfords seem to do one from Continental that I am considering. I will also do the water pump at the same time.

  12. The front two seat belts squeal like you wouldn't believe everytime you pull them to put them on. I am presuming it is just a case of getting some lube on the roller part.......so the question is how do i get that roller bit? Where are the screws etc which need to be removed from the relevant panel. Cheers.
  13. Thanks for that, it is interesting as BVS mechanics (see my thread about spark plug change) want £130 for the shock and reckon it will take 3 hours to do!!!!
  14. My offside rear shock absorber is leaking badly and needs replacing. So firstly how much should i pay for a replacement? Not too sure about ebay anymore having bought a 'dodgy' wheel bearing from there recently. And also once purchased how much should a garage charge to switch them over?
  15. Gambit.... No that was a small garage in Fareham, Hampshire called BVS Mechanics. Seemingly rip off merchants because i got a new quote today from Collisons (big family run garage) for £59.00 all in.
  16. How easy/complicated is it to change the spark plugs on my Subaru Impreza GX Sport AWD? A garage has quoted me £120 (including the sparks @ £8 each). Is that a good deal?
  17. Yeah, i thought about colour matching being a problem. With regards to the mechanism, it wasn't hit that hard, its probably [the window] about 6mm too high by the centre pillar and obviously about the same down at the front (by the mirror), The door (and window) close tightly if you push the door and glass at the same time when leaving the vehicle but obviously there's a quite a big gap when closing from the inside as the glass doesn't go under the trim.
  18. So i assume a bit of a nigtmare job then? Someone suggested a replacment door....is that a bit of an overkill?
  19. Just to continue from my previous thread, i've heard from someone that you need to break the window to replace the regulator (on my impreza gx) as (he was told) the window is attached to it! Is this true? Apparently he was told by his Subaru garage.
  20. I'd rather get the window fixed to save on matching colours etc, so looks like its a trip to a garage as i can't seem to get at the relevant area to see the problem. Looks like im going to need a regulator (which is a pain). does anyone know a good garage/mechanic in the portsmouth area?

  23. Can someone let me know if there any 'hidden' screws which need to be removed in order to remove the drivers door card.
  24. Today (whilst reversing with the drivers door open) i decided to 'not see' a lamp post and proceeded to to drive into it!!!!!!! It didn't hit the door just the window, so now the window is 'wonky' and doesn;t work (go up or down) and the door won't shut properly from the inside (you can close it tight from the outside if you push the window at the same time). So i need to realign the window, my question is therefore does anyone have any tips to get this sorted and also how do i remove the door card. I am grateful for ANY information.
