  1. i solved the steering wheel shake - both front wheels were unbalanced. the naughty private garage that i bought it from should have at least had that checked. during the test drive i didnt have the chance to take it on the motorway - lesson learned. if you cant take a car out onto the motorway and run it at 70mph (or more if possible) then perhaps kick up a fuss. the vibration only occurred at 80+mph and only for a narrow band of speed. (vibration gone at 90mph).
  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat-six_engine Flat-six engines are wide, and would restrict steering lock if placed in the conventional positions for front-engine drivetrain layouts. As a result, most flat-six automobile designs have been rear-engine or rear mid-engine designs, and have been subject to the limitations and drawbacks of these designs. The longest surviving flat-six-engined model, the Porsche 911, is a rear-engined sports car with acceptably compromised interior room and a long history of suspension development to utilize the characteristics of the drivetrain layout. Subaru, an automobile manufacturer with a history of making aircraft engines, has adapted a front-engine configuration for use with its flat engines. The engine is mounted longitudinally ahead of the front axle and the transmission is mounted longitudinally behind the front axle. Although this layout is intrinsically more expensive to manufacture, less compact, and less space efficient for front-wheel drive than a transverse V6, it allows the addition of four-wheel drive by taking power off both the front and back ends of the transmission, since the transmission is located between the front and rear axles. As a result of this layout, Subaru now specializes in all-wheel-drive vehicles. Subaru's 2003-2009 EZ series EZ30 engine featured a Porsche designed and German manufactured Variable Valve Lift (VVL) system, that further enhances high range power and smoothness at idle. It was discontinued on the successor of the EZ30 engine, the EZ36 engine.
  3. here is my outback - sorry for the brutal photoshop cropping 2005 legacy 3.0rn i dont have a manual and i don't know what the proper name of the colour should be...Brilliant Silver Metallic/Granite Gray Opal with the totally impractical taupe leather interior perhaps. possible upgrades might be: sequential LPG privacy glassb but before that happens i have to solve the dreaded steering wheel shake which occurs only at 80-85mph. i am praying that it is not the dreaded shaker syndrome as has happened in america and its a simple wheel balancing / cv joint / wheel bearing /. tracking thing and not something supernatural (eg a fault that cant be replicated when a mechanic is near the car but rears its ugly head as soon as you drive it out of the garage)...i will know by the end of this week. wish me luck. does anyone know where i can get hold of a UK owners manual for a 2005 outback H6?

  5. hi i am a mid life crisis living in milton keynes. born in 69, and an east african asian. i grew up with epic stories of my families driving subarus in uganda in the late 60s and early 70s. the most epic being how idi amin's military turned up at my dads house asking to take my uncles new subaru....ever since that day i wanted one. more than 40 years later i finally got my own. a legacy outback h6 3.0rn (i did say mid life crisis) my wife doesnt know about the fuel consumption or the tax bracket. i live in fear everyday but it is worth it when i hear that flat 6 roar....
