BenGreen Posted October 18, 2014 Share Posted October 18, 2014 Right guys, recently had a problem where my hawkeye impreza keeps over heating, it seems to always be about an hour into my journey (about 80-90 mph) on the motorway, the temp just suddenly sky rockets up. I drained my coolant and used some coolant flush to clear the system then filled back up with coolant, that didnt work. Changed my thermostat and drained the system and refilled with some more coolant. Still not solved the issue, once i parked up, let the engine cool down, i checked the water level and there seemed to be alot less in the main system but way too much in the expansion tank, plus residue where it looks like its over filled, if anyone has any ideas on what may be causing feel free to comment as im pretty stuck for ideas what to do next.. Gambit Posted October 18, 2014 Share Posted October 18, 2014 :( Did you make sure it hasn't airlocked when you filled it back these are a real pain for air locking. And the thermostat did you do the boil in the water test just to check see if they was faulty ? I'd have a look at you oil cap too just to check the headgasket hasn't gone and the coolant look a different colour brown tinge to it ? dan Posted October 18, 2014 Share Posted October 18, 2014 Any other symptoms mate? I'd probably start by getting the coolant system pressure tested. Could just be a leaky radiator cap or hose. Sorry to say but theres also a chance the plastic head gasket has failed. Impossible to diagnose on a forum get it to a garage mate. BenGreen Posted October 18, 2014 Author Share Posted October 18, 2014 Well I've drained and changed the coolant about 3 times and don't think its air locked, yeah checked the thermostat and that seemed to open and close when put in boiling water and cooled down again, the oil doesn't have any head gasket symptoms, but the coolant always to come out as a rusty looking colour, before i diagnose it with the head gasket gone, i may try changing the radiator as its only about 80 quid to replace Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Gambit Posted October 19, 2014 Share Posted October 19, 2014 Not sure how much the self sniff test kits are but might be worth doing that or if you have a garage you trust to check it shouldn't cost much. I'd have it tested before spending money on a new rad just in case, with you saying rusty colour. You might be right rad might be bad on the inside doing it and blocking it up with crap then resulting in it to overheat but I'd have a guess the oils breached into the coolant. Apparently they done a 'sniff test' on it and came back negative, and because my car wasnt overheating at all they cant seem to find the problem. So went back to get my car as they seemed clueless, and the total charge was £10.00.... now im beginning to think if they ever done the test as surely its costs more than that? Anyways, im going to give the guys at jd performance near derby a ring in the morning and see how soon they can have a look. Will update when i know a bit more.. I had more or less the same problem, on my classic spent months chasing non existent airlocks, replaced hoses, had a sniff test kit ready just in case. BenGreen Posted October 21, 2014 Author Share Posted October 21, 2014 Yeah thats why im concerned it could still be the H/G... nah no over heating at all.. they took it on a few test drives and left it running and still no overheating. .. now i just look like a mad man making it up.. well hopefully the guys tomorrow will be able to find the problem straight away. BenGreen Posted October 22, 2014 Author Share Posted October 22, 2014 Haha well unfortunately im not a mad man and it does have a problem, just been to the garage (scooby specialist) and hes diagnosed it straight away as H/G. The reasons for sludgey kind of stuff in the expansion tank is due to the carbons entering the cooling system from a small crack in the H/G, and the reason it overheats after about an hour is because the engine has warmed up soo much that it lets the gases escape into the coolant. I'm going to be dropping it off at the garage monday so they can begin work on it. He's quoted me between 800-1600 depending if I've cracked the head or warped it. Its a fair bit of money but not the end of the world. So while the engines out I'm going to get some new belts, light weight wheels and my manifold put on as its easier when its on out, so sort of worked out in my favour lol. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Bit gutted to hear but I did think that was the problem to be fair :( Was hoping it wasn't the rusty/brownish looking coolant was the give away for me.
