I bought a 1999(T) Subaru Outback 2.5. Its done 107k miles and seems to run well but the last 'real' history invoice is from 2005 when the cambelt was done at 48800 miles.

Should I be worried and get it done immediately..I dont want the engine breaking...

I'm not a mechanic so apologies for the simple question..

What sort of cost should I expect at an independent garage

Thanks for that but Ive seen quite a few posts on the web to say that you cant tell from the look of the belt whether its going to go and also the pulleys wear too

Like I said on your previous post the cambelts should be replaced every 45k, due to the fact that there's little history with the car I'd get it replaced for piece of mind.

Have you checked the belt to see if there are any cracks or unusually shiny spots on it? Also while you're there I'd also get the water pump changed too!
