Stereo lights (red ones) not working (Subaru Legacy my 2005)

Hi,

I recently got this issue with my car (Legacy wagon 2.5i 2005) where the right illumination around the stereo unit stopped working. Before that happened, i installed an Android head unit (i went from just having the shelf with the lid installed in the car). It worked nicely for a while, but suddenly it want black. The odd thing is that the instrument cluster still works, as does the dome-lights, the radio (incl. display), glove compartment light, etc (so only the stereo surrounding light).

I've googled it and got to know that there are supposedly two fuses that might be involved here (#16 in the driver compartment fuse-box & #8 in the engine compartment fuse box). I have replaced both of them to no avail.

What else should i investigate? Could it be the actual "bulbs" that have ceased to work? is that common?
