  1. Turns out... the gearbox is knackered. Lost second gear on my way home... So I guess it needs reconditioning/replacing. I've been quoted around £1400 from two places now, so doubt I'll fix it myself. This thread can be closed I think. Unless anyone knows anywhere where I can get a cheap gearbox? (If i did go down the repair route, I'd probably look to buying a gearbox from ebay and getting a local mechanic to repair).
  2. The noise only occurs when in gear and accelerating... I'm not a mechanic and don't really know much about the ins of a car... but I've read a bit, looked online, and am excellent at guessing 🙂 When idling, i.e. not moving, but engine running; it sounds fine, almost perfect. When moving, if i take it out of gear, it sounds fine. there's no drag, or any evidence of drag. As soon as I put it into gear and accelerate, the noise happens... it's a kind of grinding/squeaking noise. My guess is purely by process of elimination... I don't think it can be the engine as only happens when in gear. So it may point towards the gearbox? or bearings somewhere down there? The "Check Engine" warning light has been on for a few days as well as the "vehicle dynamic control" one... this first appeared a month ago, but turned off after putting in some diesel injector cleaner. Didn't work this time. They both came on together, turned off together and then back on again. No idea if the two issues are linked. Hopefully they are! The car is booked in to a garage tomorrow (Tuesday), so I guess I'll soon find out what the problem is. I just hope it's nothing too expensive!

  4. Hi everyone, I've tried searching for this in the forums, but I couldn't find anything obvious... I'm a new Subaru (Legacy) owner. I've had the car for around 6 weeks now (long story how i got it, but not relevant) - There's always been an odd noise while driving it. I thought an MOT might find the issue and fix it... but it didn't. After reading various things online, my suspicion is that the flywheel and/or clutch need replacing. I think this because the noise only happens when in gear and driving along... (I guess it could be the gearbox)... I want to sell the car, but not before I've repaired it (although if anyone wanted to take the risk with buying it, I'd make sure they new what the situation was)... anyway... as, I was saying, I want to sell the car, once I've repaired it... Does anyone know a; how likely it is that the flywheel, clutch or gearbox has gone/needs placing? and b; more importantly, how much it will cost to replace either of the three items.
