Been having problems for the last few weeks regarding really harsh ride quality, basically I can feel ever bump in the road and ride feels extremely 'bouncy'. Had the car checked over by a local specialist who have checked all the shocks, springs, suspension components etc, and the've done four wheel laser aligment, tracking etc. and the only issue they found was a knocking noise coming from the N/S/R shock. Will need replacing at some point they said but not urgently. Surly this wouldn't causing the terrible ride quality to this extreme would it? Any other ideas please guys?

When the shocks went on my nissan it had the same symptoms however when MOT'd because of the uprated springs it passed the 'bounce' test

So if if one shock was on way out it could make such a huge difference? The garage reconned it wouldn't cause much of an issue!

One shock wouldn't be that bad but a couple will make it bouncy, the only check on mot time is visual, if they are oil filled then they leak when shot so visible if duff, but if gas filled they wouldn't show unless badly corroded, if yours are gas filled there's a chance they are screwed, try pushing on each corner a few times, if it's ok then when you stop pushing it should come up and settle, if pooped it will go up and down at least once usually twice as it's just the spring supporting it

I would try get some silicone oil spray jack the car up so you can see the chrome rod and give it a good spray. You might get lucky and it sort it out. Subaru's do suffer from knocking, as the suspension is at an angle to help with the balance and suffer from drying up. there is a bloke on youtube who drilled a hole in his and used some sort of filler valve so he could attach something to it to keep it topped up without needing to remove it all. Has to be worth a try 1st :)

both my rear ones went within a short time of each other - every time I hit a slight bump it just bottomed out on the stops with a big jolt

Have watched this guys vid on youtube about fitting a grease nipple on the back shocks so the can be filled with grease to stop the knocking noise, any of you guys tried it?

 

I've got the same knock from my rear shocks and have been looking about to see whats best to fit. Any suggestions? standard or aftermarket.
