Battery condition guage

A voltmeter or better still ampere meter. That will tell you the state of the batter at that moment. It will give you an indication of its charging well and holding a charge.

If you have a voltmeter and find the meter doesn't read 13.5-14.2v when engine is running then it could suggest a alternator issue. If only.ignition is on and you see the voltmeter rapidly drop from 12v then the Battery is pooped. It won't always tell you the full picture but gives at least one indication of possible problems.
