Forester Cruise Control

Hi All - Just joined (despite owning 6 Subarus for some considerable time!). Among my "Fleet" I have a 55 Reg Forester Auto and had to change the Battery. Unfortunately I didn't have my "mini power-pack" handy and now I cannot get rid of the Cruise Control light flashing (and bringing on the EML - which I can cancel but only temporarily). Any ideas, please?  I have twice done what some other Forums tell me to do - (NO LUCK).
