Code 23 subaru forester

Helo i need some advise my 1999 forester was driving at a speed of 140kph it stopped the acceleration i slowed down upto 40kph then the acceleration started again but it was jercking if i go more than 3rpm then i connect the 2 green wire under the dash and it showed me code number 23.

1. Maf sensor  how can a maf sensor die just like that

2.should i purchase a new 1 or used from a similar car 

3.how sure is it that the maf sensor is the 1 faulty 

Kindly advise me. uploaded the engine picture its a non sti model subaru forester sf5 vertion 6 engine
