Hi all I'm hoping this is the best place to get help with my ej22

I have recently installed an ej22 n/a engine into my vw T3 caravelle which I have to say is an awesome engine. I am getting slightly hight readings from the emissions. I know it won't be spot on as no cat but when my mate had the engine in his bus with a different exhaust his o2 level was 0.46% compared to my 1.91%. I have a twin exit tvr exhaust with 2 powerflow silencers added.  The o2 sensor is positioned in the tvr silencer as I have attempted to pick up both manifolds but not sure if it's getting a good hit of gasses or maybe they are too cool,Would it be Ok if I positioned the sensor so that it only picked up from one manifold or would this not be a good idea. I was thinking somewhere near the flexi. Any other ideas are welcome as it's definitely running rich.

Thanks all

Wotcha and welcome

I would position it closer the original setup is positioned just after the first cat so shouldnt be a problem moving it closer to the engine.

how does the system differ to mates setup did he join the down pipes into one before silencing similar to the original?

Thanks for reply.

Only thing different really is my mates twin exit silencer is different and was made by a subaru conversion specialist. I can only assume it is picking the exhaust gasses up better. Oh and his went through the power flow silencers last but gasses are traveling about same distance.

So would it be Ok picking up gasses from just one manifold as only one sensor but two manifolds coming out of engine and to get it closer to engine I'd have to choose a manifold. Doyou tthink to maybe put it strait after the right powerflow silencer or before?

Thanks chris

Ps did you see the pic

Yup I looked at the picture,

the original system has a two into 1 manifold then a cat then a sensor then another cat then a silencer.

you have two silencers into a big silencer and twin exits this - irrespective of distance travelled is going to disturb the flow and mixture due to the circulatory nature of the silencers as opposed to a cat which is straight through perforated material

You can move the sensor closer to the down pipe but I think overall you may be looking at a redesign of the exhaust to get an undisturbed flow, a two into one before the silencer or a twin sensor setup

Right ok thanks. May look into getting it close to stock. Thanks for the help

Yea, goes OK but wouldn't mind a bit more power. Had to put some db killers on after video. Am thinking about getting an ej25 and putting head of ej22 on next year but thus is such a good engine I don't know if il bother.

I dont know if you will gain that much - a bit more low down torque maybe but if you have a good lump at the moment stick with it and get it spot on, is it a closed deck block  as that will take quite a bit of tuning work to increase the power reliably

Yea closed deck ej22 from a 1996. Love it!

Like you said earlier, I didn't think you can tweak them much but ok as is.

if you are staying NA you wont be looking at huge bhp figures but bolting a turbo to a closed deck ej22 would sort that. However as its a strong block you could look at maximising the NA potential by blueprinting (lightening, balancing, porting, flowing, etc) and raising the compression, the gain in BHP wont be huge but the driveability and response will be there.

Running some lumpier cams will increase your top end rush.

Obviously the more you can do yourself will keep the costs down and you will get peace of mind knowing what has been done when by whom

Thanks for info,  I did look into bolting a turbo on but was told compression us wrong and injectors need changing. Basically looked easier to just get a turbo engine and throw that in.  Only thing then tho is I'd have to fit rjes turbo clutch kit and find somewhere for intercooler. Plus have to break another subaru and get loom modded.  Not sure what to do so going to mull it over and maybe do something next year.
