2005 Outback auto - long pause and massive thump changing up

Hi Folks, new to this forum thing, and needed some help so thought I'd give it a go before selling car as spares or repair as I still like it!

2005 2.5se outback, 172k miles on the clock, had it 7yrs, full service - usually good runner, no question. One morning, towing a small trailer I had stopped to take a phone call and then pulling away again, changing up to 2nd, there was quite a long pause and then it slammed into gear with a massive thump - like the trailer had brakes on and had then released and hammered into the back of the car. Stopped, got out and checked trailer - nothing, all fine. Gearbox...pulled away again and it did it again. As I was in the middle of nowhere (Devon) I drove it to see if there was any difference with the manual selection - nope it slammed every gear thereafter except going into 1st. Got to work, worked the day and drove home fine (12miles), until almost home, it did it again - thump! Engine light on with cruise light flashing.

Took to garage next day - codes where P0700 (request automatic trainmission MIL on), P0731 gear 1, incorrect ratio.

Previously to this in the same month, I had had the engine light and cruise control flashing and the codes were to do with the tumbler valve sensor...can't remember the exact code, only the general issue. This seemed to disappear on its own and has not come back...always ominous!

Changed the gearbox oil and filter (it was due) - gearchange thereafter was like silk and for 15miles it was like a new box. Then the pause-thump-change started again so, seems to happen with the car is fully warmed and been driving a while.

Read up on solenoids issues so investigated further (BTW, Subaru UK want £2004 for the set and assembly). Had my mechanic drop the autobox pan off (all clean and tidy) and check the resistance on the solendoids - all ranged from 3.2-4.6ohms when cold. To try and replicate the warm auto box, my mechanic gently warmed them up with a heat gun and one of them got up to 6ohms, when the others didn't go up much more than they were already. Not conclusive. Unfortunately, and very annoyingly, I've lost the bit of paper he gave me with all the info on about which solenoid registered what - so can't give you chapter and verse on them. Put it all back together and dare not drive it far since.

So, in summary, the car drives fine until warmed up, when the thumping starts!

Anyone had this sort of thing happen to them - or any ideas?

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Doesn’t sound good and I can’t help you directly.  When I had my own problems (Battery, warning lights, Satnav map lost) I came across Mr Subaru on Youtube in the USA who seems very knowledgeable with strong opinions. I didn’t find anything to help me with my problems but it was an interesting diversion.

Good luck.
