l have bought a 2011 forester a couple of months ago. After i bought the l noticed the power steering felt a bit strange like it was pulsing or missing and it seems to resist and then not resist i thought this was the electric power steering behaviour and then one day the power steering just stopped working all together, its just not heavy its dangerous as it seams not responsive.I have ordered a reconditioned rack from Poland i am still waiting for it to arrive i have not driven the car for a couple of weeks and decided to start it up and strangely the power steering is working again but is still pulsing. Is it possible that somehow it reset itself.has anybody else experienced anything like this.

HI,Joem , we seem to have something similar  with our XV , pulsing then no resistance at all ,likes to go right most of the time but not always ! I have been pondering whether it is a rack problem or the control module ,I have been leaning towards the control module ,my thinking being that it is completely right oriented and a worn rack pinion would most likely affect steering in all directions . I think from what you have experienced it may be the same as your power steering is back ( sort of ) .Ours is like this , sometimes it seems ok ,with this mild pulsing behaviour but then it goes bad again , I think possibly it is better from cold and gets worse as you drive it . From looking on the American forums , worn rack pinions can be an issue from very low mileage , the control modules come up as suspect and then there are the people who don't realise that they have Eyesight lane guidance ! There is a company in the Bristol area that recon racks , I will try to contact them and see if they have any useful info .
