Rear differential problem

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to Foresters and have a problem with the rear differential on mine which is a 99 manual 2.0 litre GLS. The previous owner, for some reason, put an Impreza sti limited slip diff in the rear. This is very noisy now so I bought what was supposed to be a secondhand  4.111 manual diff and the garage says it wont fit because the splines are different. Are the drive shaft splines different on an Impreza?

thanks

Dave

I think you'd have to change the shafts to accomodate the different diff. So if you are reverting to standard i presume you need to change the driveshafts back.

There are a load being broken on ebay so you should be able to pick a pair up fairly cheap.

I'd sell the sti diff and shafts to recover some costs

Ok, thanks for the quick response and advice.

Dave

Don't take my word for it as i'm no expert but im sure others have had this problem.

If you post in the gearbox/ drivetrain section somone with more knowledge will answer

I know they have to match up with the front diffs otherwise you chew up the center diffs and visa versa.

Would of thought the GLS was mechanical LSD as standard (all S models are but 99 year could be either), Splines are longer on the LSD I believe.

Personally I would get another LSD diff over going standard open diff ...
