4758nigel Posted April 17, 2014 Share Posted April 17, 2014 hi all finally got to take the scoob out yesterday n after i had been into sainsbury i was reversing out of the parking bay and there was a kind of knocking noise/feeling coming from the rear of the car i'm guessing that it's either one or more of the shafts or the diff. my question here is has anyone else had this problem and could it just a simple problem of the diff needing toppping up i don't really want to go spending loads of money an a whim so thought i'd come here first ;) thanks all in advance hope to get it sorted ASAP. 4758nigel Posted April 17, 2014 Author Share Posted April 17, 2014 hey dude.....this is his mate speaking.....its sounds like the diff is slipping, but we found out today that the car had been stood for a min of 6 months....we will be checking all the fluids today anyway so i....we lol will let you know what we find....what fluids do we need for the diff if it does need changing? stants Posted April 17, 2014 Share Posted April 17, 2014 The rear one ? Shouldn't have to but i've not worked on the subaru diff. Normally have a fill up hole and drain hole on the rearward facing case. Don't forget to undo the fill hole nut first. Wouldn't want to empty it and find out the fill nut has seized :-( One of the little hand held syringe type guns from a motor factors should be good enough to fill it. They normally just fill to below the fill hole and thats it. No pressurisation needed. quit Posted April 18, 2014 Share Posted April 18, 2014 no its quite simple mate, they whine and make alot of noise anyway due to the age of cars now but one my mates had a whine on his UK , took it to a gearbox specialist who recommended a replacement (to the tune of about 1k) he was thinking just do it and its done but then the usual £ crisis hit and it never got done about 80k later and it was still fine, just kept topping up the fluid and regular changes Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
4758nigel Posted April 18, 2014 Author Share Posted April 18, 2014 after taking the scoob round to a mechanic mate (who loves subaru's and own's a fair few of them) he took it out for a spin to see if he could work out what what going on n he said it sounded like "diff lock" so we had a look under the car then he checked the "FWD" fuse in the engine bay and it was missing so we replaced it with a spare from the fuse box (in the bay) and fingers crossed it seems to have sorted it out no more clunks clicks or knocks when turning or reversing :D will still be giving the diff a top up since it can't hurt thanks all for all the advice given. now all i need to do is wash her and get some snaps then i'll post them up here ;) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
4758nigel Posted April 18, 2014 Author Share Posted April 18, 2014 after having done some more research the "FWD" fuse changes it from AWD to FWD so i'll have to top up the rear diff and try disconnecting the fuse again and see if it'll settle down and stop making the noises if not then it'll be a case of replacing the rear diff :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
