Overheating wrx

Hi folks have a 54 plate wrx prodrive. Had it a year now and no mechanical issues however the last few days if I sit at idle for more than two minutes the temperature gauge shoots up almost red lining. What should I look for? Cheers in advance

Did you check the water and oil?

Could be a dodgy thermostat. Is the top hose into the radiator hot when it starts over heating?
