Boost gauge vacuum pipe location confusion

Recommended Posts

Attempting to fit my boost gauge and I can't for the life of me find the right place on the manifold to get it working, all the places I've connected it just cause the gauge to go down into in. Hg instead of up into psi, it drops down as soon as stated and then goes up to 0 when revved so I assume the gauge is alright, I can't find any info online with the same engine as mine (pencil coils on plugs not single coil and leads) I've hopefully uploaded a picture showing where I've joined it, if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated

Hi mate the left hand side of the manafold as you look at it is the best place, can you take a picture that shows a bit more of the left side of engine bay ? There should be a line near the arrow next to the red altinator cap

On the top of the strut tower in the pic there's a black cylindrical unit attached to it with three ? Pipes coming out of it one top & two bottom, that should be your boost solinoid, one should run to turbo, other into the intake where does the 3rd go to ?

I'm a bit unsure as yours is slightly different layout to mine, maybe Scooby ghost can shed a bit of light as his is almost the Same

It's a 2 port solenoid but I'm assuming your on about the clear/browny coloured pipe, that's my gauge pipe coming from the gauge waiting to be plugged in, I'm wondering if I may be right like martyc said because I didn't go for a drive, just assumed it should be near 0 when idle

Been doing some reading and think I may have it plugged in correctly I'm just a bit thick and didn't actual know how to read my gauge, never occurred that it should read vacuum on idle... Cheers for all the help though

Yeah when ticking over it's just like a na engine (suckling in air) but once the turbo spools it starts to build up positive pressure and force air into the engine (boost)

To get the most accurate reading ideally the boost vac line needs to plumbed in directly into the inlet manifold

Cheers for all the help, finally got it sorted, turns out cheap boost gauges aren't worth the effort haha, anyone know what the standard boost pressure should be for a 2001 model? Only getting about 7psi, is this about right?

Yer think it's about that in bar, it's holding boost pressure when driving but haven't done a boost leak check but checked visually and seem alright, any quick ways of checking it without buying a pressure tester or making one?

Spray bottle with soapy water and spray onto hoses if there's a leak it will bubble up or draw it into the hole,

Is yours a UK car ? May be worth cleaning your boost solinoid with some brake cleaner too. When was it last serviced ? & may be worth checking the gasket in yiur recirc valve, does seem a bit low as standard they range between 0.75 - 1.2 depending on model,

I'll try the spray bottle, it's a UK one and I've checked gasket in recirc valve, that's OK, boost solenoid I'm unsure about because it doesn't click when the green connectors are connected but seems like it pulls well enough? Saying that I've never driven another turbo subaru to compare, if solenoid wasn't working would it not stop the turbo from boosting at all?
