Forester dilemma

Being 24 (and having only had one car) ive been playing with the idea of a classic car and a motorway muncher, but as the classic car world refuses to insure me on the one i was after i have decided to go for an all rounder!

i have no need to ferry around children or take rubbish to the tip, im still a student and have always been drawn to forester xt and fstis.

insurance has dropped enough, 650 for the xt and 960 for the fsti which mean they come into price range of what i wanted to loan and spend.

The car will ferry me to and from uni, 6miles each way and do a 400 mile round trip liverpool-bath-liverpool every weekend or so, whilst i know mpg isnt great on these its more than acceptable on such a unsuspecting rocket ship.

i have never managed to see one in the flesh or have someone take me out in one, it would set my mind at ease to speak to a few owners and see their own foresters and if they are feeling generous, take me out for a spin in one.

Im currently based im portsmouth and would like to hear back from any owners that may be able to help me!

Hello & welcome,

Not sure of any foz owners that way on her but you could try uk foz too,

Runing costs aren't too bad if you find a local specialists,

With a six mile commute you'll only really get mpg in the low 20's on longer runs expect high 20's early 30's

Only other things really is servicing, an independent will be roughly half the cost of subaru,

Typical costing breakdowns are dependant on your garage but rough prices are

Clutch 300-400

Major service 350-500

Cambelt 350-450

The rest of the parts are relatively cheap and widely available, and if you like working on your own car then they are fairly easy to do.

Im actually from up north (Liverpool) just working down here for the next 6 months! and i can travel! i may need the car for next winter...

The dilemma was between me getting a R26, but the two i went to look at have failed MOTs before i saw them, which instantly put me off them as they needed more work than i was happy about, so started looking around again to see what was available and i really want something me and the OH can travel around Europe/Scandinavia. And have always loved the look of the Forester (Boxy, sleeper)

Running Costs shouldn't really affect if you like the car, true petrolheads will pay for a good car! hence why the forester seems a good choice but i have only ever seen one on the motorway.

I shall research some specialists by me, as id buy one preferably with a service! but those figures are actually cheaper than the R26 (Apart from the service) but i can do most of that myself (Or can i?)

How big is the fuel tank on these?

Not sure about the tank size as mine's a sf5 so it shares a 45l tank with the same year impreza,

Major service is every 3 or 4 years depending on model an interim service is about a ton but is easy enough to do yourself, plugs are a pain but again only once every 3/4 years

Like most jap cars you can pretty much dismantle it with 4 sockets and a screwdriver [emoji3]

Once you get your head round the layout of the engine they are easy really.

Ahh i presume the engine layout is quite abit different with it being a boxer 2.5.

are there any manuals or PDFs that would be worth having to take a look at the bits and pieces like sockets etc? A haynes manual sorta thing?

I own a 2005 Forester XT. 2.5 turbo with the PPP kit. It runs well and I enjoy the car. I have a reputable local specialist look after mine. Got a full service on Good Friday at my home. This is full service including belts for under £500. Will cost more for anything unseen. Subaru will cost double this though. I don't work on mine but great car, fun, comfy and able in the winter. Good luck in finding a nice one, certainly some out there. I am miles away from Liverpool so cannot help.

I live in Cambridgeshire so both equally far sorry to say. I would be prepared otherwise to let you have a drive etc. Just to far. I use Shell V Power in mine and I only do low mileage I put a tank in full which gives me normally just under 250 miles. Cost of that tank is around £58 depending on where I get my fuel. I find servicing fine if you find an independent specialist but like stants says, this can be reduced if you can work on it yourself for minor service. All other costs are regular costs like any other car. I shopped around a lot for insurance and it was worth it. I had an Impreza before the Forester. I prefer the Forester in just about every way although both great cars. Impreza was a classic. Maybe enquire about one you like the look of first if no one is local to you with one. They are not a hugely common car.

£500 for spark plugs & diff oil change? I did these jobs myself and the plugs are a pain in the **** but didn't expect it to cost that much. Ouch.
