My 2001 wrx recently has developed a squeal when I lift my foot off the clutch in 1st, 2nd and reverse. As far as I know the clutch has never been changed and it has covered 83000 miles. There doesnt seem to be any noticeable slip from the clutch. Someone suggested it could be the gearbox but I havent noticed any leakage.

If it is the clutch, what type would you recommend as a replacement, how much should I expect to pay for the change and is there a specialist in Glasgow you could recommend. Thankyou for your help :help:

I'd say Release bearing too.

OK, so would you need to take the clutch out to repair it? If so would you recommend replacing the clutch at the same time?

Release bearings are generally part of a clutch kit and it's not something that can be repaired. Three parts of a clutch that can fail; pressure plate, release bearing and and clutch plate. If clutch goes the car will slip. If the pressure plate goes you can't depress the clutch with the peddle. If the bearing goes it squeals until it collapses or seizes and then it will start wearing through the clutch fork.

Oh, not good. What clutch kit would you recommend buying?

That depends on your current power or future power. You only want to do the clutch once. Standard blue box Exedy clutches are good for 300ftlb and if you aim for higher I'd recommend a pink box clutch which are rated to 350ftlb.

As you say the squeal happens as lifting off the clutch (engaging drive) I would say it the friction plate spring hub squealing as taking up the drive . Release bearing normally makes noise as pressing it and it engages with cover fingers and put under load .

Is always best do a high mileage clutch as complete kit anyway .

Doesn't sound anything too serious and not overly costly .
