I do get 36mpg towing a caravan on B roads

570 miles a tank wow is that mostly dual carriageway driving?

That's awesome, You must have run in just right 😈 I believe chipping can release quite a bit more power and use the turbo better to go; but I figure it's possibly not going to give long-term gained unless one changes the exhaust system and cat and DPF to make it worthwhile. But I find the wee XV has lots of torque and more than enough power to accelerate oit of a tight spot; once i got the feel of the diesel. I had a turbo legacy which was fun and sounded awesome at 3000rpm but the power just was not as instant and responsive at the XV. Maybe I'm getting old but I like to get many miles from my tyres so tend to take it easy on corners, unless it's been snowing in which case it's the ultimate play toy for taking off the traction control and power sliding round tight bends lol. Especially on the alpine 5 snow tyres I'm now running! Hope your motor is still as happy in a few weeks time 😁

Possibly if the system does not have it's own backup battery like the small button 2032 cell most computers use to keep their bios settings. But I would want to check with someone who me has done it first, since I don't know if the radio might then need a code to switch on! I use Shell ultimate every fill, probably not necessary but I did find initially I got more miles from a tank of the posh stuff lol. So I figure it almost pays and the additives help keep the injectors and system clean. Besides I'm averaging 485 miles a tank of mixed driving so compared to my last Subaru 2.5 pet, it's still miles cheaper

Maybe you got some bad fuel and it confused the system, or perhaps like all solid state stuff some of the memory just got corrupted. I work fixing and rebuilding this kind of digital electronic systems and devices. Often turning it off and unplugging it for a couple of minutes causes the random access memory to discharge and forget the infinite loop of confusion it was caught up in, so allowing when reconnected again for the recalibration and clean refreshed running I hope your Scooby's happy now 👍

Wow, Fixed with a laptop! Hopefully good now on. I know it's all electronically controlled, the only mechanical part being a host of sensors. Maybe just disconnecting the battery would have worked lol. That's actually a cool fix though 🙄

HI XVGUS, I take 2 empty 5l oil containers to my subaru dealer and they fill with the correct 'Havoline' engine oil they specify for the diesal. It works out cheaper than buying on eBay this way and they supply a filter also. By keeping the receipt I can prove I have used the correct subaru' s own oil so this covers any potential issues with warranty, and they are happy for me to do this. When you have changed the oil the procedure for my car which is 2016 diesal is on page 11-17 of the manual will re-set the on-board computers oil replacement data. Because if the high pressures in a diesal some is absorbed over time into the oil diluting it! The procedure for my car after replacing oil is:- 1. Depress brake pedal 2. Start engine, and keep it in idling. 3. Release the clutch pedal. 4. With depressing the brake pedal, perform the following: (1) press the rear window defogger (2) turn the headlight to the =00= position (3) press the rear defogger position to off (4) turn the headlight position to "O" position (5) repeat steps 1) through 4) once more, and go to next step (6) release the brake pedal. Note Each step (1) through (6) must be operated within 4 seconds. 5. The preheating indicator light will blink approximately 5 seconds when the data was reset successfully. If it doesn't work then turn the engine off for 15 sec and repeat the above steps again. I have done this when I change the oil and filter and it worked no problems. Although I suppose if you are doing an interim oil change between dealer ones then it probably isn't really needed. But I also believe it's worth doing an oil change every 5k or 6 months as it keeos the engine cleaner internally and reduces wear long-term. Plus when you consider how much money goes into the fuel tank, it's not a great cost. I now average 45mpg 50% town and 50% at 50mph on country road, and I don't mince about 😉

I like the colour of your new wheels. They look good. Yep it's that time of year, time to get my winter rubber out of the shed and hope it doesn't rain for a bit lol I hope your winter tread serves you well 👍

Absolutely agree, I take an empty oil containers to the dealer and they fill them up with the correct havoline engine oil for me. The cost is actually less than me buying the oil myself from eBay etc. They are happy for me to do interim oil and filter change, and because I keep the receipt I can prove I have used the correct oil should there ever be a problem. I tow a caravan and a trailer in my forest off-road so the car gets extra hard work. But perhaps doing extra oil changes is something to consider in the future once they have fixed the problem. Personally I think the manufacturer oil change intervals are stretched a bit; since the deposits of carbon in the oil must cause more wear. Carbon being such a hard abrasive material and dealers and manufacturers assuming we only keep our cars for five years beyond which their not really interested in anything older. A well cared for Scooby can last at least fifteen years in my experience, my plan is to have mine at least that. Thus the extra oil changes will pay off down the line. Also cleaner oil makes for a cleaner engine internally which gives strength to longevity. Honestly changing the oil on an XV is about as simple as it gets! I don't know many cars that can pull a trailer of 500kgs of logs up a muddy hill out of the woods with so little drama 😁

I had a similar problem with a turbo 4 can legacy. It was the hydraulic valve lifters. I cured it with Wynn oil valve seal rejuvenator and several oil changes. It had been caused by the hydraulic valve lifters lacking pressure to maintain the valve clearance. If you don't go over 3000rpm then damage is unlikely. Your car is much newer so perhaps an oil change with a pre flush will cure it as the very tiny oil channel to that lifter may be a bit gunked up. I always change oil at about 5k, don't care what the dealer may say, diesels get dirty oil much faster than petrol engines so changing oil in between dealer service can only be a good thing in my book of car Zen.

That's not bad as the going rate to respray a bumper is about 200 round here
-
Mine had a similar issue for the first 3k miles but has improved along with the economy. When new I managed to stall it twice setting off and felt a right ... I forgot about this issue now since it's much better at 6k, plus economy on commute was in mid 30's new, now averaging 46mpg on the same commute. Euro 6 engine with an oil change at 3000.

Nasty wee scratch. I got a quart if the pearlescent paint in 2k and the base cost from Dingbro, and have already had to touch in a paint chip. It's worth it keeping on top of paintwork. May I ask, was it expensive at the paint shop to get your bumper re-spray ?

Did some leather work on the gear and handbrake gaiter's as I didn't like the feel of the vinyl ones. Ok so the stiching's red and rest is orange but I think it looks quite nice.
-
Indeed it is just as Rizmo say. From the analogue clock just scroll down one and you have the economy stuff. I can't believe the mpg I'm getting from the euro 6 diesel engine. It's awesome 😁

Thanks Paul, That's good to know, they do have many electrical toys so the battery must get a hard life. I must find out about the memory minder as it sounds a useful bit of kit when taking the battery out. Chris

We drove over a hundred miles Aberdeen to Braemar and around Cairngorms towing a one ton caravan, and got an average of 36.9MPG! Pretty awesome for towing :¬) Daily commute urban is 39-46 MPG on average which is better than when new, now just over 5000mls' and on a good run we've had 56MPG. I have found using premium diesel seems to give better MPG and I often sit at 40MPH in 4th gear to keep the DPF clear and have noticed no difference for economy display reading between 40 in 4th gear to 5th gear...

The head unit on my XV is Harman Kardon as factory fit with sat nav. However if your Pioneer head unit has an SD card inserted, then this may be your prob. Try pushing in the SD card to allow it to release and re insert it. The maps will be stored on the card and if the head unit doesn't see/read the card then perhaps this would affect sat nav's function. It is always possible the SD card has become corrupted, this could be checked by a computer I imagine, haven't taken mine out yet and att to computer to check it out. Maybe a wee job for tomorrow as I'm curious about the format. Technology's great when it works, and my job when it doesn't lol. Good Luck

Take care Dug, and I hope you get another Scooby soon, have you considered a fixer upper? My first two where rescued from certain scrappiedom for peanuts and with a fair bit of loving they never let me down. I would go a pony for your bucket/Matt's they're awesome, I just can't bring myself to spend more on something to collect muck lol. Do keep popping by 🍻 Chris

Good luck with the new XV Dogconker. Is is a European 6 Diesel? I just changed the oil and filter on mine at 3500 miles. Bought the oil and fikter from main dealer with receipt to keep good on warranty, had to take my own containers but it worked out about £30/5Litres which I thought was quite reasonable.

Looks great, is it from a Forrester?
-
I love your military grade floor mats Dug. Please, where can I buy some. I put my old leggy mats in because the XV mats don't like water. Only thing is the XV floor is massive... much longer and a bit wider. Your mats fit really well, look good enough to bath my Jack Russell without any water getting under and serious enough to withstand the demands of my girlfriends multi story high heels lol. Chris

I don't like this glitch. Perhaps there is a software update/ patch, or are some of the sensors behaving badly? Shurely it doesn't bode well for the XV earning it's place by standing the test of time as the likes of the Legacy and Forrester have done; and the new Forrester is based on exactly the same platforms any way, as is the new Impreza! Here's hoping these issues get ironed out quickly 😐

Hey Swayze88, What's up with your scooby? I did hear something bout wires catching on steering!! But what's your's doing ?? Chris
