Thanks for the welcome.  I'm interested in car design and launching my own studio, so starting off by trying to develop a Special Edition of the WRX. I wasn't happy with the lack of style and flair of the current model compared to the concept they presented in 2013, so thought I could do better.  People who have seen it love it.

Wotcha and welcome - sounds interesting - my lad wants to get into car / bike design so will be following your posts and feeding them into him :)

Sounds like a good lad, give him my best wishes.  If he's heading for University go to Coventry for the best automotive design courses in the world.  If he wants to learn at home and fool around then there are plenty of resources online to play with 3D design.

 

I'm self-taught, just the basics to show my concept but learnt using Alias Automotive Studio (recommended to me by the Univestiry a few years ago).  It needs a good sturdy computer (mine just burnt out with all the strain, so I need to find money for a new set) but there is a free educational licence from Autodesk.com to download (gigabytes of application) and play with if he wants to get up to the professional end (not for the faint-hearted, needs a lot of time and patience).  He'll need to search their web site for the Educational section.

 

As for the current WRX.  I believe it can be tweaked and tuned and restyled to make a stonkingly pretty performer with new nose, grills, lights, diffuser and a few other details (hundreds of extra horses under the bonnet).  Currently just trying to raise the money for the first step.

I believe the software is available on a MAC, thought I've never been rich enough to buy into Apple.

For my work I tend to build my own PCs to get just the right spec, and usually a little cheaper than buying one off-the-shelf.  Although mine is cranky now after several years' hammering it.  Once I have all the Scoobies built I'm on for my next upgrade.

I had a play about with 3d graphics and design for pc gaming not easy but is good and interesting to see what people have done with it :)

 

I sometimes get very jealous of all the people who can spare the time and have the talent to really make good 3D design work beautiflully.  I'm still muddling through with drafts then will leave it up to true artists to complete my work.

Yeah it's a talent for sure not one I have myself sadly :( well I guess if I dedicated more time I might get better but not like the pro's :D

You definitely need a lot of time and patience to really dig into the depths of the upper end of the 3D graphics markets.  I've been playing around for years and only scratched the surface.

yeah think the software has come on a fair bit. like with the lighting effects.

I have done programming on CNC machines and PLC programming. The PLC is like a work of art and some people just have the ability to read it easily. I was working in a factory (new machine install) and was looking through a program that wasn't performing correctly, me and their maintenance sparky had a couple of hours looking and couldn't sort it. They got a bloke in from down south and he charges £1k per day. He had a full day at it and couldn't sort it. so they had to pay a bloke to come over from Germany (paid traveling time/expenses) and he sorted it out within 4 hours. The cost of the bloke is.........£5k per day :o

Part of my problem with 3d is that there are so many options and ways to work in 3D, you have the "simpler" modelling in NURBS (treating objects like clay to shape and play around with), then there's surface modelling where you define, like a draftsman, every curve and shape of the surface.  I've fooled around with NURBS and mesh modelling but then had to switch through to surface modelling for the Subaru C13 idea and my ambitions in car design just so I have something that can be used for final CAD, tooling and production. 

 

Even so I'm only drafting the concepts not the finished models.  For completion I will need to find suitable modelling specialists willing to chip in some time to help get the project finished.

 

As for costs.  That's always a stumbling block, but I may be able to get a little government grant funding if there's still some left in their kitty; but not at £5 grand a day.

It never stops evolving, I have to upgrade my applications every year or two and relearn when I have time.
