Big end gone 2004 wrx

Recommended Posts

Hey guys looking for help and what may have caused issue to maybe prevent in the future.

Engine had done 100k

Drove perfect, engine mint no noises.

Took to garage for oil and filter change 15 miles after service engine light comes on and immediate banging noise from engine.

Got vehicle recovered found to be big end bearings. But only explanation being offered is "it's a common fault"

Vehicle was taken to a different garage to where the service was done so not just saying it to get out of being at fault.

But just like to know what could of caused this as it seems very coincidental.

What was a service has now become engine replacement and a bill for £2200 all for a £200 service :/

Any pointers would be great.

Cheers guys

Usual cause of bottom end failure would be continuous use while low on oil. Could also be caused by an extended period of time between services. If the car hasn't been warmed up correctly and raced around it could cause big end damage. Age is a factor but it would be tough to pinpoint an exact cause.

What oil was put in for this recent service?

Car had oil filled to max at all times. Use car to commute and have 5 min driving to warm up before putting foot down but even then Ive not been pushing it by any extreme and getting 30mpg average.

Garage put 5w30 valvoline fully synthetic syn power

At a 100k it's pot luck as said above, mine developed a crank rattle at 104k and had I not had it stripped as soon as diagnosed it would have let go sooner rather than later. Assuming the oil change was done correctly then i suspect its just coincidence. Unless you have driven every mile in the car then there's no way to know how it was treated previously.

The crank bearings in mine looked like this when the engine was stripped down,

To get 30pmg average you must have been using the right foot very lightly lol

Take car of it most of the time lol nice having the power there if and when you need it.

Was not even a slight noise or whine previously. Just unlucky then

Got another engine going in it this week then gonna take the old one to pieces find exactly which parts are ****** sell head and bits that don't need maybe.....

Didn't even have a slight rattle at start was fine then eml and very loud knock.

2nd hand from grade A.

Adding to it new clutch, cam belt with uprated tensioners and pulleys. All auxiliary belts, fuel filter, oil filter k and n panel filters

Just hope the engine ain't a clanger

Got the kit from graham Goode. Couldn't find any standards with the water pump so just went with them. Saves time and money later down the line not been a cheap affair though lol
