May 16, 20169 yr Hi, Just had the XV serviced and notified the mechanics (Swindon) on my brakes which are starting to squeal when braking at low speed. Their reply: no need to change them, but the manual clearly lists that the high pitch sound is an indicator for worn brakes. Help/advice welcome!
May 16, 20169 yr Yeah, it's quite a thing that dry pads can cause a very high pitch but quite faint squeal. Mine tend to do it when the brakes get hot, but not all the time. Been told it's just they need greasing but it's not so bad I'm paying to have it done until I get the pads changed. the squeal you get from worn pads is really obvious much like a train pulling into a station. that said at over 50k unless you use engine breaking al the time you're probably due for some pads to be fair, me and the wife are pretty light on pads and she's having hers done next week and on down to about 20% both cars at about 50k
May 19, 20169 yr Author Brakes are making less noise again, oddly after a full stop due to stupid (#$@%#$%) lorry driver who needed to overtake a cyclist on the opposite road... Nevertheless, new brakes are on the agenda. Would be grateful to know the costs your wife (or you...:)) paid for them Dogconker.
May 19, 20169 yr It worked out about £150 each end , not sure on the exact price as we're having them done at the same time as the service so they've knocked some labour off as they'll have stuff apart anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
August 19, 20169 yr Author Just a brief update, the brakes started to make noise again. Took it to the dealer where they were all cleaned up. Quite a lot of corrosion on the rear brakes which was removed probably caused the noise/grinding. Front brakes are up for replacement in about 10-12K according to the mechanic..better start saving..
November 21, 20169 yr Author Front brakes replaced. 65K, not too bad. Ouch (cost) but better get them done before winter really sets in.

November 26, 20169 yr Yes, Subaru not the cheapest. Surprised the discs didn't last a bit longer, changed wife's pads at 50k discs were fine.
December 9, 20169 yr Has anyone wound back their brakes themselves? I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the rear brakes is binding slightly, i'm thinking of taking it to bits and greasing the pistons & Slider pins. Is there any fancy electronics needed or is it a simple push in jobby? I shouldnt have to wind them back as I dont think i need to replace the pads. But just in case it would be good to know.
