Standard boost is 0.9bar. Safe boost is 0.9 bar without it being remapped for the extra boost due to possible fueling issues.

Any ideas why it's boosting around .5? And would you say it's safe to adjust the boost to  around .9 without a remap? Thanks.

.5 is actuated boost, so somethings wrong may need to investigate

So you're saying boost sensor? Pipes? Something like that?

Could be one of many things,

Have you started off by seeing if there are any stored fault codes on ecu ?

If it comes back as clear, check boost soliniod, (may be worth a clean)

All hoses and pipework relating to turbo, wastegate actuator arm to see if all OK, and may he worth checking if you have restrictor pilot in place.

Assuming everything is standard

No codes in memory, what's a restrictor pilot? Car is pretty standard apart from piper cross filter and cat back exhaust. I've adjusted the actuator arm as much as I can and that's getting it closer to .7 at times. But don't feel happy doing this. Going to put the actuator arm back as I found it and clean the boost solenoid.

basically a slow and painfull process of checking all boost pipes

has the inlet cracked? its the plastic pipe that runs under the inlet manifold, its prone to cracking as its old and perishable , pig to change

Sounds like a boost pipe related issue. I was getting only actuated boost pressure at silverstone and with a few chats to many knowledgeable peeps it was decided that on the long corners I was getting oil surge and possibly having some oil up in the boost pipe blocking it momentarily. Check all pipes and if you have any silicon pipes you may not see it at idle but they could be sucking in on boost.
