A7urx
Hi i am new to the forum and have purchased my first subaru inpreza classic turbo uk spec. Not had a good start with it. Recently i broke the key in the door lock barrel which i repaired. I had to also get the steering column changed as i broke the steering lock. After the repairs the car doesn't start. the car just turns on for a second and switches itself off. I was told by a local mechanic it has a Immobiliser problem so i sent the immobiliser, transponder and ecu to a company named Autotronics in Leicester who said they found no faults with the coding but also reflashed the ecu. Any help would be much appreciated!! Many thanks!
JamesJDMwagon
Has it got fuel? (can you hear the pump prime for a few seconds when you flick the ignition on). Are the injectors firing? Do you have spark when you crank it?
A7urx
Hi thanks for your response. Yeah i can hear the fuel pump prime. Sorry im not a mechanic not sure how to check if there is a spark when cranking (where would i check this?) The car does crank and somtimes start for a second and switch itself off again. JamesJDMwagon
If it starts I doubt it's the immobiliser unless the pumps not getting enough power (enough to run but not enough to build pressure and hold it) that could be a damaged circuit. Really hard to diagnose over the Internet. could be a lot of things really mate and you say the ignition barrel was changed that might be a place to start. Look for signs of bad connections. You've got to think want a car needs to run then rule them out one by one. Theres some helpful vids on YouTube search for "crank non start" If you set on looking into it yourself. A7urx
Yeah i was a bit sceptical about the immobiliser unit being faulty myself but only went by the mechanic word. Starting to think it may be somthing mechanical went wrong when the steering column went in? Maybe something like like this issue here? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/42284-car-starts-then-shuts-off/ Will check out some videos on youtube on crank non start and rule out some issues. Not sure though if this is a mechanical issue or an electric one?
Mark D
When changing the ignition barrel and using a key with the old chip, my friends Impreza classic would start for one-three seconds then turn off with engine light flashing. The black ring around ignition barrel acts like a antenna/sensor for the chip, when changing ignition barrel I kept the old one on and just swapped the chips in the key. Before swapping chips, I could start it by putting the old key with old chip near that black ring, then starting the car with the new key Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
A7urx
Hi Mark thanks for your response. I kept my original barrel that i broke the key in as the local locksmith took the broken peice out and cut me a new key. Thats the problem im having evrything is the same and it dont work. Ive has enough of the car sitting on my drive so i just decided to load the car on a recovery truck and send it first thing in the morning to scooby specialist in wickford essex as the guys confident he can fix or bypass the immo. Hope it works!
Mark D
I meant the old key, when he cut a new key, did he reprogram it properly. Within the plastic body of the old key there is a chip, if you still got the broken old key, put it near the ignition when starting Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Mark D
https://vimeo.com/196943563 Took a video now of my 2001 legacy starting with no chip, however I couldn't get it to start by placing the old key near it, maybe it needed to touch the metal aswell on mine but don't like starting it and turning off too many times! Also that dash cam was getting annoying! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Phillip1993
Iv had this problem with mine and it was down to a bad earth on the whole car the starter worked fine as this has its own earth strap so I would check that your body has a good earth Sent from mTalk
A7urx
Hi guys thanks for all your messages teying to help. I took the car on a recovery truck to a guy in wickford on xmas eve and was happy to help! He got it running for me within a few hours. He said the immo was packed up so he took it out and reccomended i buy a new one if i wanted. However he also said the ecu was faulty as some loose wires touched each other under the steering may have blown a curcuit on the ecu. He gave me a Apexi which was worth a lot he said as it was the only one he had. Done some re-wiring and all was up and runinng!
