Hi guys,

I wanted to purchase some oil online for my Legacy, after speaking to Len at Subaru 4 You he recommended a semi synthetic 10w/40 but online there are many different suggestions.

Could I go far wrong with the 10w/40?

simple answer...no, 10-40 is fine.... long as it's pukka stuff.

semi or full synthetic., depending on budget.

and a proper subaru filter, , regular changes the most important thing.

Blueprint filters are fine, we used them for 2 decades for basic service scenarios without issue on subarus, nissans etc . if turbo i'd go ester full synthetic, cheaper option is castrol magnatec which decent (use it in most NA engines we do) and ideal cost for regular changing .

Thanks for the input guys. In the end I went for for a semi synthetic 5w30 as recommended by the book at the guys at Comma oils.

I used a decent filter to, although the process for the change was kind of crazy because the oil shot out at such a rate from the sump, my oil container couldn't drink it fast enough and it started to overflow! I did have my oil mat down which helped but it still manage to get on the drive 😐 I'd never had this happen before using the same setup.

Anyway it's done now and she purrs very nicely.

Yes it does come out quickly, but next time you change your oil if you screw a Fumoto Quick Drain Valve in place of the sump plug, your days of ever spilling a drop of oil are over, you could do the job in your best suit on the living room carpet.

I had one on a Hilux previously (not recommended for my current Landcruiser sadly, presumably due to sump design) which similarly would chuck 7.5 litres of oil out at a  tremendous rate, a Fumoto valve made life much easier.
