I’m looking at buying my first subaru as it is my dream child hood car. I have seen a Subaru gb270 with only 38000 miles got all the extras it is up for 12000 pound but I have herd a lot of bad story’s about the 2.5 litre engine. I am mechanic but I don’t fancy rebuilding the engine 😂

would buying this be a wise desicion or not? If not can anybody point me in the right direction on the ideal first Subaru Impreza as I want to own one before I have to grow up and look at buying a house hahah

many thanks

Rhys

Wotcha and welcome - It is a little hit and miss unfortunately, I had a standard 2.5 sti and had no issues with it, serviced regularly and whilst all points on the rev counter were used in full there was (as always) a degree of mechanical sympathy. I also bought a 'built' example that on paper looked great but had just been cobbled together and let go 4k into its life (1K with me)

I am staying with the 2.5l lump and on the standard one have put the cylinder 4 cooling mod in place, will retain a conservative tune (330 - 340bhp) and service regularly.

The project one is getting built to be a bit more robust and will run higher power but spending time on track and weekend toy will mean increased service cycles.

Buy the motor you have always wanted to own but have a little in reserve as a just in case fund

Hi pal thanks for the reply appreciate it

sorry for the late reply aswell I was abit sour because the gb270 I was looking at sold 😂

I have now come across a 2005 imprezza wrx but with the 2lt engine it’s got 47000 miles on the clock the car is up for 7000 but I imagine I could knock the seller down on price as it is a private sale does this sound like a reasonable price?

These days I could not say - prices have gone bonkers, I remember looking at an 06 STI widetrack for that money and mileage a couple of years back but there does not appear to be any reasoning behind the prices at the moment
