Strut Towers

Featured Replies

Hi,

I own a 2005 Blobeye Subaru Impreza WRX.  It just failed its MOT due to the OSR strut tower being badly corroded and holed, which I'm very upset about, as it sounds a very expensive fix.  I've been told it will need to be welded. I have contacted a number of garages in the Kent and Surrey area, including Subaru Specialists and Classic Car Specialists who do welding, I'm just waiting on the quotes. Has anyone had this done before on their Subaru and could please give me an idea of price? I know it will depend on how bad the corrosion is.

On the MOT certificate it says, "Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength Offside Rear Inner (Upper inner wing strut mounting corroded and holed) [5.3.6 (a) (i)]

The MOT code meaning is attached in the picture.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Its becoming very common and its not gonna be cheap. They rust from the inside out so you wont know till theres serious damage/rusted through. I would expect the bill to be well over £1000+ per side im afraid, and exactly how much you wont know till the strip it and possibly take the outer panel off to see how extensive it is.

It's one of those things thats borderline car scrapping territory :( really depends on how good is the rest of the car? (if one sides gone then its prob very similar the other and what are the arches like?). So really depends on how much you want to throw at it.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, that's very useful. It sounds scary, as I won't know how bad it is until they strip it. I really want to keep the car, as I've had it for 15 years and of course I'm very attached to it and would like to keep the car as long as I can. I think the arches are fine, but again, would want this to be double checked if I go through with the work.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks very much. I'm getting a quote on Monday, so fingers crossed.
