The car is Standard and a genuine Type UK.

I think so, it is an offical PPP, but that doesn't gtee it.

I would think that unless is has an absolute cast iron subaru service history, they won't want to know. Hope I'm wrong.

if its official PPP it should have had the map sorted as part of it and the parameters would have been changed so surprised it failed

Don't think it will matter if it has the PPP they will use everything they can to try not do it, I'd say the only hope is the service. But you never know until you try :) might get lucky hope your mate gets it sorted out though.

Turns out it's not ring land failure, the bottom end has gone.
