I'm a long time Scooby owner (on number 3 now), first time joining a forum and i have a question.... no amount of googling can show me a thing.... I bought a 2010 STI Cosworth just before Christmas 2012 and have gone though 5.5 litres of oil during that time only covering 1500 miles or so. It's done 28,500 miles and been impeccably serviced but. I had it in for a service last week and engine oil was found in the coolant tank next to the rad. LOTS of oil. Not emulsified or anything - nice clean thick black engine oil coating the whole of the inside of the tank, including the inside of the cap! Doesn't look like a head gasket issue and it's running sweet as (off the road now of course!). It's going in next week and should be covered by the warranty but i'm worried this could be major, major and can't find any reports of problems with the block or anything..... has anyone else heard of anything similar? And if I do say so myself you found the best place to join for your 1st time :) And as for the problem I've heard nothing myself either. And have no idea what the course would be to make that happen. I'm interested to what they say it is. I'm not trying to scare you but might be just a problem car. My Dad had a Granada Scorpio many year ago, and that had a problem of burning oil quick and smoking really badly even though it was a new car. Ford had there top engineers on it, my Dad went through 26 other cars that ford had to give him while they tried to sort it from, Maverick escort soft top and my favourite of them all the Probe 3.0ltr V6 :) I can't remember the total time they had the car but they did everything inc a full engine swap and it still had the same problem In the end I think they gave him the newer full extra pack ford sierra sapphire. Jay762 Posted May 17, 2013 Share Posted May 17, 2013 Wotcha and welcome - Kudos on the car lovely bit of kit - any time I have seen oil and water it has been emulsified as you describe, I have never heard of it being as separate as that and also to lose that amount of oil. My 2p - the plumbing is cross connected - you have an engine breather pipe connected to your coolant expansion bottle or you have a fracture / failure in the head which is allowing oil into the return line. Scooby Pete Posted May 17, 2013 Share Posted May 17, 2013 I had a similar problem, it was down to when I replaced my Engine, I got the rocker breather pipe and the lower header tank pipe mixed up and eneded up filling the oil galleries with water. Luckily I didnt drive the car like this and spotted it before any major dmage was done. Spent about £100 on oil and engine flush and put 5 litres of oil in. Ran the car for a few mins drained out the oil and repeated 5 or 6 times. Scared the cr@p out of me. Hopefully yours will be an easy fix. I'll post what happens and thanks for the input 8o) As an aside, one of my business partners took delivery of his VXR8 Bathurst today and took me out for a spin.... compared to the Cossie even that 600bhp bus seemed tame! yoscoob Posted May 17, 2013 Author Share Posted May 17, 2013 They certainly are chalk and cheese, my 'next' car was going to be a V8 the last 3 times a bought a car! It's an itch I'll scratch eventually I'm sure. The biggest difference between the 2 is how they sound when you're driving (or passenger). The Bathurst sounds incredible as it drives past but cos it's competition is things like big audis and m5's it has to be fairly civilised too. The cossie's an assault on the senses in comparison... love it! If the Bathurst was mine I reckon i'd be destroying it's residuals by ripping out some of the sound-proofing! Never driven anything on the road that piles on speed like the Bathurst though. It just needs a dump valve!
