  1. To avoid ruining your paintwork, with your first attempts with a da polisher, offer to polish someone else's car first, so as to get some practice in! Make sure they are not bigger than you, and don't have bigger mates, before you start.

  2. Trouble is, there is nowhere for a service stamp. The service book has a couple of pages of service requirements, then goes straight to body check section. Loads of pages for body stamps, but none (other than PDI) for service stamps. Very odd. If I was paying for services, I would have the bills to staple into the book, but with the first three services free, I have nothing. I did not even have a contract with the dealer today, as they get paid by Subaru. I think I will give Subaru a call tomorrow, to see if they will give me something. As said, if I keep the car, no problem, but if I ever want to sell, I will have no records for the first three years - and who buys a car with no service history?

  3. Had the first (1 year) service at Archway Subaru in Findern, Derby. Smashing people and job done within 2 hours. Body check done, and known stone chips only mention, so will get booked in at Paint Chip Techniques in Mansfield. Oddly, the service book only gets stamped for the body check, not the service, and as it was free (paid by Subaru), I have no paperwork either. Will be electronically recorded by Subaru, but would help to sell with some stamps or paperwork. Not that I will sell it, it's a keeper!

  4. Cleaned the car up a bit, as going in for service tomorrow, and body condition check, and found more stone chips - this time on the rear offside door. At least I now know what the banging noise I heard on the M1 were!

  5. Very helpful lady at Subaru HQ advised on using a Subaru dealer for free service, as seems only they are authorised to do them, and found nearest ones for me. Handy as I can also get bodywork check and any software updates done at same time. Booked in for Monday at Archway in Findern, near Derby. Just need to get up early to get there, as A38 is a swine that time of the morning! Will take the dog, so we can go walkies while we wait.

  6. My XV is jut coming up to a year old, so time for a service. Phoned dealer, spoke to service reception and started to book car in. "Did you buy this car from us?" "Yes" "Can't find it on the system - which model Toyota is it?" Ah, we have a problem - apparently, the Subaru part of the dealer has closed down, but they will service the car as some Subaru mechanics have transferred. He asked if I had a service plan and who with, so told him that all Subarus sold round then had three years free servicing as part of the deal. Have you proof of this? Er, no. Seems like I might have to pay and claim back from Subaru. More likely I will have to cancel booking and find a Subaru dealer elsewhere.

  7. Driving up M1 this morning and one heck of a bang from what sounded like a boulder hitting the car. Spent the afternoon checking all over the bodywork for a dent, but found nothing. Probably something flipped up by front wheel, and hit the underneath, somewhere. That will wait till next month, when it goes in for service.

  8. No probs - all cars take time to get used to, and find all the bits. And nothing to be embarrassed about. I got a Tom Tom plug stuck in my Kia dash, and had to take it back to the dealer, for him to show me how it should be removed. Actually, it was stuck, and they nearly wrecked the dash removing it - it was the tenth one they had done, as the Kia had a small socket!

  9. Yep, that's the only control I have found - dealer can possibly re-program, as there are quite a few alternative settings, but I prefer to keep it stock, for safety. Only have to press the button, when stopping, to let the passengers out and, providing the engine not switched off, will stay unlocked for rest of journey. So, if you prefer to have the doors unlocked, just press the unlock button after the autolock has operated.

  10. As I only do 5k a year on mine, I wonder if there is a recommended age change point, as they will not be worn out for 8 years, at this rate! I know I had to change a couple of tyres on the van, as they were showing tyre wall cracks, and they had only done 30K in 5 years.

  11. I bought a cheapy from Halfords. Fixes on the rear headrests, and fills the gap between the roof and the top of the seats. Strong enough to restrain my Lab, with a lead tied to the guard. Can also be fixed to the front seats, and included extra mesh used to fill the gap between the front seats, if you want to give the pooch a bit more room.

  12. Took a trip from Mansfield to Farnham, had lunch, then drove back (old school reunion lunch). Almost 400 miles and I am snookered. The XV did it in style - a great long distance cruiser. Planet Rock on DAB all the way there and back, just to keep me sane!

  13. Letter from DVLA today, as my driving licence is about to expire (you did know they did that, didn't you?). So, apply by post, but must be with NEW photo OR apply online, and they will use the stored passport photo - no matter how old it is, or even if it is the same as on your old licence (which mine is)! Where is the sense in any of this? I look nothing like my nine year old passport photo and, if I renew online, I will look nothing like my new driving licence photo. When I renew my passport next year, I bet they will say to use my driving licence photo! I will be in my box, and still look 40 on my documents!!!
