Cheers matt - i think its more the standard 2l STI where people say the WRX PPP has more torque

Haha indeed Snoop, thas a potentially a bit on the sexist side but i take your point.

I'm not saying i believe it, the bit in the speech marks is just a copy and paste out of the email i got off the dealer. Dunno how often the oil has been changed but guess it will become pretty obvious once i get to see the service history

Ah kl, well they look good all the same. This may sound like a daft question but does anyone have any idea how the acceleration/power in a hawk STI would compare to a bug WRX prodrive? Parkers puts the hawk at 276bhp and 0-60 in 5.2. From what i can find out its 245 - 265 for the PPP and 0-60 of around 5 which sounds pretty good to me, i also hear it has better low down torque than the equivalent STI. Turns out the dealer PPP i am lookin at comes with a 15m warranty too... is becoming more n more tempting

The STI version has 6 speed gearbox and bigger brakes the engine can handle more power if you are up to tuning it later.

STI suspensions are better than the WRX suspensions

STI differential is better

So its not just the 40bhp...

yes I know you can mod anything and change this and that. you do not need to hassle when you can buy it as stock.

Don`t get me wrong. This is an advise only. An average john/mary does not even know how often the oil should be changed.

And we already have arrived to a very critical point. Every turbocharged engine is very sensitive to the oil quality.

No worries snoop, i appreciate it. Tbh i've done a fair bit of reading up on sites etc but figured ultimately it was best just to chat to you guys with a bit of actual experience so its good to hear all this stuff. I'm kinda expecting that oil changes will be documented but if its been done by someone who knows what theres doing i spose there's no real way of telling how often the oil has been done.

Buyers market for WRX then matt? You mentioned 2.5k sounded about right for a std bug wagon n i reckoned (from what i've seen online recently) that 3.9k is probably a reasonably good deal on a low milage WRX prodrive but not so cheap as to be suspect. What u reckon?

Well you can`t tell except if the owner is a fanatic and has all the documentation about the car ( this is very rare I know ). You have to trust in the owner and get as much info as you can about the car that you are going to buy. Just ask him or her what kind of oil he/she used? If the owner can`t tell or can`t say the proper milage when was that done just skip that car and move away.

Sti commands a bigger insurance premium, was chatting with nick and ash and although theres a few differences in thier ages and age of cars and locations, one being a classic uk2000 and the other a bug sti, both are putting out something in the region of 350bhp, nicks is a good couple hundred quid more to insure [emoji20]

Thas interesting stants - I kinda thought the STI would have been cheaper as I thought it would have needed less modding to make 350 ponies compared to a UK 2000.

Matt - a blob WRX for 3k? what sort of miles/owners/hist? you seen any for sale online at the mo?

Cheers all

Nicks is also a blobeye. And speaking of them not seen them for awhile did Ashes mistake of signing up for the wrong club at Japshow turn him :D

I always get them mixed up besides it was 7am when I wrote that, ash was on nights for a while last time I spoke to him and I see nicks got himself an xbox1 so I guess thats where he is lol

Lol I've been thinking about an Xbox 1 but I suspect it might take over a significant amount of my spare time

Matt - can you by any chance remember the details of the wagon you found? Sounds like it would be a useful comparator. I emailed the guy yesterday to find out (before I drive up there) whether he would consider an offer of 2200 given it needs a new cambelt (assume 300-350 quid). If he's not interested 2800 seems a bit steep from what you have said and I don't really want to go all the way there to take it out and find out he wont budge on the price

Good point stants - stupid law change I forgot about that. Think I've probably played my hand with the £2,200 now but will see what the history is like and how many receipts etc it has. Do you have much experience cash buying used cars? Other than my first golf (£150 bargain!) I've always had something to part ex so people tend not to move on the asking price but give me a 'good'  price for my part ex. Any idea of what sort of money can you normally get off asking? The prodrive bug is from a dealer and is priced at £3990 but tbh i'd rather pay 3,300-3,500 but dunno if that is an absurd offer. Bit of a noob question I know!

Best thing with dealers/garages is just say to them out right will you take ex amount for cash now they normally go off and number crunch and let you know I'd say they will come down a bit just depend what they part ex'd it for to start with.

Ok cheers gambit, still waiting to hear on whether they have the history. By the sounds of things it was part ex'd at a dealership then i think these guys bought it from the dealer so potentially two peoples worth of profit on it by the time i get to make an offer but hopefully the main dealer will have passed it on at cost/a loss to shift a new car

Thanks for the links matt - more to bear in mind....

Can't say i disagree buddy altho still think the classics still look best. That bein said that silver bug gambit posted was a pretty nice looking motor. I'm still pretty relaxed about sacrificing the looks a bit if i save a bit of dosh on a well looked after, low milage bug rather compared to the hawk/blob equivalent. People say don't buy a scoob on milage but surely a low milage one with a full history has gotta be reasonably safe bet?

On a side note why do herts seem to have no reputable scoobie specialists...
