I was leaning towards the 2.0 as I couldn't really see any benefit to having the 2.5.  Especially as it's more thirsty!

  • For a daily runner i absolutely love my 2.0. I can sqeeze 34/35mpg and about 400miles per tank of vpower. (More on longer trips) Insurance isnt too bad either. Wouldnt sell it even if i was load

  • My little old 1800cc punto is quicker than a n/a impreza. I couldn't deal with the embarrassment. Food for thought [emoji5]

I can't understand how the bands go from £285 to £485 then £500 surely the £485 band should be somewhere more in the middle of the other 2 prices.

I think it has better in the midrange....but you can buy a 2.0ltr,  change back box, air filter and get a remap to around 270bhp.

That's my plan and I've been told it's perfectly achievable with just those mods.

Are there any concerns with buying one with over 80,000 miles on the clock?

Not really as long as it's been cared for and serviced regularly

I want a 2.0 turbo but they all seam to be bug eye, i cant find any hawke eyes

So i either buy a 2.5 Hawk eye, or  a 2.0 bugeye

what are the disadvantages to the 2.5 ? how often does the engine need rebuilding/ maintenance etc ?

There is the blob eye in between the bug and hawk. That's a 2.0 and towards the end of manufactor there is the dccd version also known as widetrack. Very tasty looking car. They 55 plate blobs also come into the lower tax bracket. I think the widetrack is quite sort after so has a slighted higher value.

I'm not entirely sure which is which but I think I prefer the one with the indicator just behind the headlight on the wings...

I've just seen an advert for a 2002 WRX that says it has the following upgrades: sti turbo, sti intercooler, sti panel filter, sti ecu and sti large bonnet scoop.  Is this gonna make much difference to when it was standard?

Anyone got any ideas about this one?

2.0 l stronger engine, early 2.5's suffered from some issues, probably uses a tiny bit less fuel.

2.5 more torque ,

A friends WRX STI hatch had its engine fail...and heard of others so I'm not that convinced they resolved all the issues tbh. I'm sure lots of them are perfectly fine...but there'd always be that doubt in my mind to the point of keep £2.5k aside just in case.

Obviously just my view and I'm sure loads of owners would argue with me on this [emoji3]

You can get a 2.5ltr early 06 hawrkeyes in the low tax bracket a few did scrape through :) other than that the high tax bracket does put me off a lot of the cars

Softens the blow a bit now that you can pay for the tax monthly

Biggest pro for the 2.0 is the cheaper tax bracket.

£285 ?

So the fuel difference is marginal ?

My main concern is the fuel running costs

So how often are engine fails ? do the occur often ?

Sweet i need to find this, how can you tell as they dont give the exact date the car was registered

So the £500 road tax is due in one payment ouch

No when they changed the tax rules and got shot of the tax disc last year they introduced paying for your in 12 monthly payments by direct debit. It's actually cheaper than buying 2 lots of 6 month but slightly more expensive than buying 12 month outright

£500 is for cars from March 23rd 2006. So before that Hawks are £285. So has to be a 06 plate. Usually in the ad they will say it's lower tax band..if not you'll have to ask.

Do they fail often...they don't fail every week or anything crazy like that [emoji15] but lots do fail...my specialist Subaru mechanic was rebuilding one when I took mine for a service and said he has done loads and they are weak...ive heard of two major fails in the past month that needed full engine builds

2.0 it is then.  Drinks less than a 2.5 and they generally seem to have better 0-60mph times.

I think I prefer the MY01 Bug Eye, just looks better.

I love this i really do but its silver if it was blue i would buy it in a flash:

It has all the upgrades and has keyless entry and an awesome remote start !

This car i like but how easy is it to remove the stickers ?

this is the one i really really want :

But after hearing about the engine and the road tax i am in a double mind

The 2.5l engine should be fine if it's had the recall ecu flash or a remap think it was to do with them running to lean on high boost/rmp and melting pistons could be wrong.

As for De stickering fairly easy just take your time maybe use a heat source. Then wash cut polish wax after, good as new
