Beefing up an Impreza

Hi guys, very new here and to the whole world of changing anything on a car so forgive my ignorance! I have just got an Impreza wrx hatch (regestered as 2009 but after some rummaging on the internet I think it's a 2008 model)

I spend a lot of time on very beaten up roads, Forrest and fire roads so am thinking of maybe beefing up the car a bit so I'm not scared of breaking it! Oh and a bit of extra power would always be nice! It's my everyday car so I'm not looking for anything too mad but I'm curious to what you guys will suggest!

Small wheels with high sidewall tyres would be my first thought. Most aftermarket parts are aimed at stiffness for road and track unless you spend big money on rally parts imo.

as above, also may be worth looking at some under car guards, sump guard etc
