Hi Guys,

I have my Brothers 202 Subaru Outback AWD, it's done 57000 miles and I don't know if the Cam Belt has been changed; or even if it has a Cam belt or is it a Cam-Chian ??  Anyhow  I wondered if it needs changing or not?   and what's the average cost of changing the Cam Belt at a Subaru Dealership?

 Knowledgeable  advise appreciated..

M

Think yours is belts, one of the leggy owners will be able to confirm this, probably due a change soon if it is belts,

Are you sitting down with a stiff drink ?

Main dealer will charge between 800-1000 [emoji22]

Independent garages will do it for half that,

Wow,  £800 to £1000??    I'd of thought compatible with other vehicles   £180 to £250.    I'm not paying £800 for a cam belt change.

this needs more research,  would need more than a stiff drink!

I think they're due at about 60k? If you've got no knowledge of it being done it's definitely an idea to do it.

It's not a cheap job on subaru's unfortunately, local independent specialists are normally best- much cheaper than a main dealer plus you've got someone that knows subarus inside out and backwards.

I tend to think of of it this way... It's much cheaper to get a belt changed than have an engine rebuilt if the old one snaps!

4 hours labour from a dealer plus parts, the kits can be bought from the likes of import car parts are a lot cheaper than oem, you've got to remember it's a quad cam flat engine so there's more pulleys to replace for a start, it can be done with the engine in situ I think the dealer would pull the rad for access which increases the cost etc etc.

I paid 400 for mine doing least yours are a longer interval these days

Subaru Dealer Abergavenny quoted me £269 . 45 for parts fitting and vat included..    Sounds good to me.

Subaru 4U  quoted £400.00

I'll get it done after Christmas..

Sounds good!  Don't actually know how much mine was on the Leggy the other week but that was a full kit not just a belt change.

That dealer only changing belt, if change guide rollers & tensioner is way more than that.

personally at 60K you can indeed only change belt if rest passes inspection then at next change do the lot.

in US & OZ belt service is 105K (same belt/parts) as they couldn't pull the low service intervals as drivers do lot more mileage & use to domestic vehicle with 90K plus belt service points.
