bear101
Hi , I was thinking about attempting to replace the plugs on my H6. I have seen a video on you tube where the guy removes the Battery and Battery tray to make access easier . Can anybody tell me if I will need a radio code to reset the radio once the Battery is reconnected and does it play havoc with the alarm or key fob. Thanks .. tom30
I have had to disconnect the Battery to remove glow plugs on my outback. Once all is reconnected all was working again. You will have to reset/ retune your radio and also reactive the one touch window. All that is in your handbook. Also start the engine and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to relearn things. Greenmamba
When I did my plugs it was from below (splash tray removed) but I have skinny hands and various short socket extensions. Removing the Battery shouldn't mess with radio codes (if it's anything like mine - integrated radio/6 CD changer, maybe different if you have aftermarket radio) or you could use a "code/battery" saver as some have done. Basically, jump leads (or similar, some use a 9v Battery rigged with crocodile clips) to the positive/negative supply to maintain current to car when the main Battery posts are disconnected. If you disconnect completely, ensure the key is not in the ignition - if it is, the car's alarm will sound and you can't reset it until reconnecting the main Battery. bear101
Greenmamba , how difficult was it to change the plugs ? Was it easy to see the coil packs and remove them from underneath ?
Greenmamba
Reasonably easy for the front 4. The back 2, 1 each side were a pain as space is very tight. The coil packs, not so much but the plugs were a b*tch cause I had to chop and change socket extensions due to space - the side chassis rails got in the way of the extensions. All told, about an hour, maybe a bit more each side.
Rich R
There is no radio code on Gen IV Legacy/Outback - it's all part of the immobiliser system. :) You will lose the radio memories, and some settings in the navigation unit (home location and stored destinations stay, but the keyboard and colour schemes reset to default for example). As for how to tackle the spark plug change, the official method is all from the top, but some people find it easier from below. What is crucial is the correct length extension bars and to know is that you need to turn the rear coil packs so you can remove them, otherwise you'll struggle. tom30
Just on this topic, does anyone know why the Battery tray has a connector on it. Is it a senor or something else.
bear101
Well I decided to let a garage I trust change the plugs for me , only charged me £55 labour .
