What gearbox do people recommend since I got my classic around 5 months ago the synchro has been on it's way out at first if I changed gear slowly it was fine but no it crunches most of the time and it's spoiling the drive so time to upgrade it's just over 300bhp. Do I go with the same code (near on impossible to fine one) or do I do a box and diff swap what boxes have people found to be good?

Depends how mad you want to go. Like for like replacement should be fine at that power level with some mechanical sympathy. If you plan on going higher power then uprated gearkit or 6 speed, but neither will be cheap

I didn't really want to go 6 speed again did that on my forester and didn't really like the drive. Which would be the strongest 5 speed I don't launch the car

Just as a guide I had 3 synchro and 2 bearings replaced in a TY754 gearbox that only needed an 8 quid input shaft seal but while the box was open I wanted any age related wear sorted. Total came to £510. While I was debating on repairing mine or sourcing second hand most breakers wanted 300+ and given the age and mileage on most of them paying for my repairs was a safer option.

I did think about just getting mine repaired as then I'd be sure it was good but couldn't find anyone to do it buying 2nd hand not many people can be sure it's a good one and will last I don't launch the car and I do like the ratios of mine but finding one is kinda hard ty752vb3aa

Bloke called Dave at East London Transmissions. Done a lovely job and quick turn around.

Clinic can rebuild current one, they have done 5th gear synchro in my type r box, done the 6 speed swap, built my old ppg box.

One stop shop :)

Although they outsource their machining work. so I find it unlikely they would do the build them self just outsource it and take a cut so really your paying twice just for the privilege

What on earth is your problem? you've done nothing but ****** and get a tit on every time they get mentioned.

Yes they do send out there machine work to SMG, but everything else is done in house.
