engine management
I would have a look at the Bluetooth ODM2 reader on ebay if you have a good enough phone or Tablet for the software Think all in pay about £16. But don't get me wrong my mates £2000 bit of kit is better but you can clear codes with it I posted some codes up some where on here ;)

Rollamite's 96 Impreza Sport Project
Oh your going to fit in just great ;) I had a problem with my bearing once and was told not to drive it though I did everyday and even drove it to get it fixed. I looked at it as an extreme sports ;) But on the Brightside atleast its just bearings and not Hubs. And great work with the post so far.

engine management
No sorry hard to say if your not even getting a problem. My guess would be a sensor playing up some where., but would need a code to find it :( Sorry

I would always say use what you feel is best. I do have mods but can't see why you would have any problems using the 10W-40 And I was told by a bloke who rebuilds blown Subaru engine's that 10W-40 was best to use in any scoob. But I have a mate who is using 5w-30 he's had no problems so far. But you can't go wrong with either I guess

I so wanted to say cooking oil ;) But I wont :D I use a named brand fully Synthetic 10W-40 I find it the best all year round oil for me but your owner's manual will say 5w-30

Intermittent Heavy Steering
Generally yes your right. But could be a tapping sound from one of the wheels spinning that you might not hear when sat in the car. It would most likely look like a buckled bike wheel when it's spinning should see it. And it's the only thing I would say to check now before maybe getting a garage to check the pump, Just to say it is, or isn't Have to keep us informed might be non of the above. Maybe no more then a blockage not sure I have heard if that's possible but you never know :D

Intermittent Heavy Steering
Would be my 1st guess the power steering pump, with you already checking the fluid I would give your power steering belt a check also. Just make sure the belts going around ok and get a friend to move the steering wheel from left to right to see if there is a problem with one of the pullys
