Just a brief update, the brakes started to make noise again. Took it to the dealer where they were all cleaned up. Quite a lot of corrosion on the rear brakes which was removed probably caused the noise/grinding. Front brakes are up for replacement in about 10-12K according to the mechanic..better start saving..

Looks like you found the problem, that mpg is much better! by the way, I noticed this post on oil and mpg with WRX's.. seems to fit: http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/general-maintenance-troubleshooting-accidents/134332916-too-much-oil-low-mpg.html

Thanks, I'll post an update as I will be heading towards the dealer anyway.

Yes, mine burned after 47K, which embarrassed the dealer quite a lot. I searched the internet but could not find posts that hint to a low quality clutch in the XV. Maybe just bad luck for both of us?
-
Not sure whether this helps, but the manual states that oil needs to be checked about 5m after you shut down the engine in order to get a good reading. Nevertheless, one inch above max seems quite massive.. good luck!

Hi, I found this video on youtube and yep, my XV lacks a cover too. I can't find this part for RHD XVs online however, only for LHD. I assume the LHD won't fit right? Anybody ideas? THX

I looked too, but did not find an DIY option. Guess it is a dealer thing. Since we are talking mpg, I thought I'd share two examples of my daily commute and the mpg on various A roads, with 30, 50, 60 and 70 mph as limits with several slopes and small hills. (apologies for the upside down, don't know how that happened :)).

Hi, i haven't checked my filter myself so can't give you a reference. But it sure looks dirty. I also noticed you are driving with the air con off? That makes your mileage def not good. I am curious whether a clean air filter would be the solution to your problem.

I just remembered that my mpg gradually improved after a few weeks. As Dogconker suggest, run it with a few tanks of premium diesel. Also, after my recent service and tyre change, the mpg's were better (about 1-2). Good luck!

Hi, On my daily drive in with several hills (1 of them 14%), B & A roads, I average between 45 to (sometimes) 51 mpg with my 2012 SE. On motorways, 50-52mpg are reached on average (flat). As for the fuel, I definitely notice the difference between cheaper diesel and a premium one (BP Ultimate) as the engine runs really smooth and far less noisy. I fill up every 5-6 tanks with the premium stuff, otherwise the normal BP. Also, I noticed that separate additives caused the engine to make more noise, so I am staying away from those. Doesn't make sense anyway as the premium stuff has it already anyway. Hope this helps,

Brakes are making less noise again, oddly after a full stop due to stupid (#$@%#$%) lorry driver who needed to overtake a cyclist on the opposite road... Nevertheless, new brakes are on the agenda. Would be grateful to know the costs your wife (or you...:)) paid for them Dogconker.

I can second that clunky gear change between 1&2...Got better after the service though..

totally agree with most, a must to have. Subaru OEM looks good, recommended.

Hi, Just had the XV serviced and notified the mechanics (Swindon) on my brakes which are starting to squeal when braking at low speed. Their reply: no need to change them, but the manual clearly lists that the high pitch sound is an indicator for worn brakes. Help/advice welcome!

Thank you for the replies. Tried Miller's for one tank but didn't really notice anything (BP diesel) improving. Guess I didn't do any harm either :).
-
Hi, Just wondering, does anybody use a diesel additive with his/her XV?

Fingers crossed! Let us know how this sad saga is developing!

Just passed the 50K with about 3mm on each original Geo. Will change all 4 with new Geolanders, I was told by my dealer that using non-supported tires could cause damage to the 4x4 drive system and void warranty, so no risk there Also, I find them pretty good in all the rain we had the last few months (can't tell with snow, where did you find the snow Dogconker :-)?).

Sounds very expensive too me. Even if the gas is special, I can't believe it would drive the price up that much. Then again, I have been wrong before..
-
Great info on the tyre subject. I was wondering if you noticed any difference on your mileage after the change to the Nokia's?
-
I noticed that too and I am very sensitive to the reflection when driving at night. Problem solved indeed
