Hi all,

Received a letter telling me my wrx wagon had an outstanding recall on control arms, so took it to subaru unity Leicester for inspection. Control arms were fine, but they tried to convince me to buy a new clutch? The clutch feels fine to me. Very minor judder when cold, but being very critical there, never slips etc. Funniest part was the quote....

Obvious taking the **** !

Only time I use the dealer for is little bits that I can't get off the Web, has the car got any history of the clutch being changed ?maybe they looked up the history and thought they'd try their luck with the new owner ?

Good afternoon and seasons greeting form all at Unity Leicester Subaru.

Just wanted to reply in regards to the quote we gave Mr Matthews and explain the pricing of the clutch replacement before this get out of all proportion.

The quote you have all seen is a inclusive of VAT price and is based on Subaru Genuine Parts which are covered by a 3 year/60,000 mile parts warranty and if fitted by one of our techs also covers the labour rate should failure occur again.

Book time for fitting a clutch is 5.5 hours (providing everything goes smoothly) as suggested the car has never had one before so all nuts and bolts are probably not going to want to give in easily meaning 5.5 hours can turn into a all day job.

break down is as follows

clutch disc       £267.14

clutch cover    £138.68

bearing           £119.27

Skim flywheel £90.00

5.5 hrs @       £85.95

sub total        £1087.82

VAT               £217.57

total              £1305.39

I am not going to go into our labour rates versus independents or how much Dave down the road charges, but i have spoken to 2 close friends who own Subaru tuners across the Midlands that agree 5.5 hours for 1 man is the right time for a clutch change and all our technicians are Master Tech trained and accredited by Subaru UK themselves.

We are also aware that other companies can beat us on parts prices but none will offer the 3 year warranty on any genuine part given by Subaru themselves.

If Mr Matthews wishes to discuss further he is more than welcome to pop in.

Again Happy Holidays

Clutch judder is a common issue across the subaru range and unless severe would not be covered under warranty on a new car, so surprised it was offered or suggested to you unless it was something you went in and complained about.

Ive been advised that even a new clutch can start juddering after 5000 miles so there isn't even really s benefit to replace the clutch for a minor judder.

The costs seem fair for a main dealer to be honest, Honda wanted more than that for a clutch replacement.

My cluch replacement is honna cost me about £550 all in at a motorsport specialist, he even has its own 4wd dyno. Yes its not subaru dealer, and no the cluch is not subaru either its exedy which im more that happy with. + around £250 for flyweel if it needs a new one. My cluch is actually slipping. If you go to a dealer you have to expect to pay through the roof regardles of what car make dealer it is. Hence I never go to dealer to get work done. Only to buy genuine subaru part then have my mechanic fit it. That way I get best of both worlds. As to 5.5 hours labour that is correct, it would be more if it wasnt subaru car.

I wasn't having a go either you just expect to pay top rate due to the technicians etc. I've not got a bad word to say about my local subaru, nothing but help even when I go in asking for that bolt that goes in the hole over there, and with it being an import most dealers don't want to know. One of the best main dealers I've delt with, having a 17 year old car that has no warranty I go to an in dependant subaru specialist who looks after a number of cars,

Nice to see the dealer taking the time and explaining how they worked out their quote[emoji106]

however I do think over £500 for parts is a bit steep as im sure 5 speed classics have a basic exedy clutch as standard(about £190 new).

I bought a pink box exedy clutch kit (rated to 400hp ) for £280 .

I don't dispute the amount of hours labour (took me longer to do on axle stands) and with a franchise/main dealer overheads you expect the hourly rate to be high to be honest .

My local main dealer is a diamond even throws a bbq for the local subaru club with test drives and raffles , so I mean no disrespect, but Which ever way you look at it it's almost £1.5k to buy and fit a £200 clutch on a £3K car [emoji53]

so unfortunately for you most people will choose the cheaper option if the cars not under warranty .

All the best clive

Interesting thread. My legacy's on 97k and as it was bought as a cat D i've no idea of the service history and no knowledge of any previous work, however, I get alot of squeeling in 1st and sometimes juddering in slow moving traffic. So i do plan on replacing the clutch in at service/mot time In january. I've not even looked at subaru dealers and will no doubt go to Sheffield Subaru Service, even though its well out of my way it will probably be considerably cheaper than a main dealer.

Thanks to the dealer for breaking down the pricing - appreciate you taking the time to do that - you may want to stick a name on next time (even if it is an alias  ) as it makes it a little less formal.

What I would say - sitting on the proverbial fence - a quote is a quote but the choice where to spend your money is ultimately yours but I am always interested in hearing about service provided by any supplier - main dealer or otherwise so please keep us informed of your outcome :)

Haha I forgot about this thread, well a year on and my clutch is still good, 10k miles covered.. Remapped to 260-270bhp by Duncan graham also.. No clutch slip so I don't know what subaru Leicester were saying when I "wouldn't make it home with that clutch"
