kfmotty8825
So today I went and did it! [emoji2] I have bought my first subaru impreza wrx 2006 model, it's been well looked after from previous owner but he didn't say much as to how to maintain it well, any tips guys? Like should I fill the oil often? What fuel too use and any other maintenance tips? Thanks
Jay762
Wotcha and welcome - Check the oil level monthly, dipstick is easy enough to get to. Use Shell Vpower or Tesco 99 ron. If it has not been done I would have a x4 wheel alignment check / setup, save you scrubbing tyres unnecessarily
kfmotty8825
Ok thanks. The previous owner just said he uses normal unleaded will I be ok to just switch to vpower? And what oil should I use?
stants
Yes you'll be fine to bung some vpower straight in, may be worth doing an ecu reset aftwr you've filled up as it will re learn for higher octane, as for oil depends if the car has many mods, check Opie Oils for recommendations. Most of us use millers oils
kfmotty8825
Ok cheers
dgarside
Can't go wrong with Miller Oils, highly recommended by my previous Honda specialist TDI North (did lots of race prep, race car builds, highly respected) and I also used for my previous Scoobys. Similar with Opie, they know their stuff, and have some good discounts on often, Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
kfmotty8825
Sorry for the silly questions but can you buy millers oil from Halford? Also I've been told about checking for seal leaks? Anyone know anymore information on this and how to check it? Thanks
dgarside
Don't think Halfords will do Millers products, I've either buy direct (I live close to Miller Oils) or in recent years from Opie. They do sell it via distributors and shops, I've seen it stocked a lot at independents around Huddersfield where I live. As for checking seals then I'll leave that to more qualified people. When ever I've bought a second hand car I've changed the fluids and started from a known point. After that I've monitored oils levels and usage after that to judge if there is any leaks. Sure some of our resident experts will drop in.
stants
Check the millers website for stockists, I managed to get 5l locally even cheaper than Opie
kfmotty8825
Ok so I found some millers oil cheers lads, my subaru is due a service and I just got quoted from a subaru garage £250-£270 for a service is it even worth it? Other garages are saying roughly £100, what's everyone do? Subaru or trusted local garage?
stants
Nope I use a trusted subaru specialist, 100 for a minor service and 400 for a major one every 4 years
kfmotty8825
So why is the trusted subaru garage quoted me £250-270 for a minor service
stants
Main dealer labour ! Quoted me 130 for a coolant change [emoji50]
kfmotty8825
Shocking! Lol
stants
I know ridiculous 800+ for cambelt Have you a local independent that you trust ?
kfmotty8825
Yeah I do, to be fair though £250 for spark plugs an oil change and gearbox oil maybe a filter is not worth the money just because there a main dealer lol
stants
Yeah, check when plugs were last done as they aren't yearly service items by all accounts, oem filter 9 quid 5l oil 50 quid max, not sure about box oil but can't be more than 30 quid, air filter 12. So I reckon the rest is a couple hours labour which is a **** take as will probably only take 90 mins max Inc brew
kfmotty8825
Exactly just gonna do it locally anyways they quoted me £100-150 and that's with labour
Scoobyghost
I always go to icp for service parts. Air, fuel and oil filters for £12.50 +p&p. Can't beat it.
kfmotty8825
Today I noticed that when I first turn my engine on from cold the revs sit at 1.5 rpm on idle is this normal?
Scoobyghost
Yes that's normal.

BoozyDave
yep, that's fine. mine sits at 1,650rpm on start up. it's the automatic choke to help the engine warm up on a cold start, the rev's go down as the engine warms up years ago there was a thing called a 'manual choke' it was a stick that you pulled out when you started the car (so I have been told, I'm too young to remember that though :D )
