I am about to buy a new set of tyre for my XV, the standard Geolander G95A seem to be a good all season tyre but I was wondering if anyone as tried any other make of tyre on their XV?

 

I was looking at the Michelin Cross climate which have received good reviews for tarmac and snow use but maybe they would be not up to the standard of the G95A's off road.

Supposed to be very good in winter and wet and carry proper snow flake simble for winter

There's a great site http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk

It has real reviews from the public rather then trade reviews. You can search by tyre or car although there aren't any reviews for the XV yet.

Thanks for the tip on Nokian Weatherproof. I've just read the review in Auto Express and they came out top. Will be about £60 cheaper than the Michelin per set so I think I will be giving them a try. Will keep the forum updated.

The standard Yokahama Geolander are a good tyres for general all round use but I have found wet grip and mild off road such as going across grass fields and up muddy tracks etc seem not to provide the performance I expected (very subjective I know) and also, wanted to make sure I had a tyre that would give me a good performance in the snow (and just wanted to try out a different tyre!). Following some research my final choice came down to the following:

 

Michelin Crossclimate £515.60

Goodyear Vector 4 Season £500.40

Nokian Weatherproof £412.40

 

For ref. Yokahama Geolander G95A £537.20

(all prices are for 4 tyres fully fitted from mytyre.com)

 

The Michelin crossclimate has received some great reviews. They are a summer tyre that have been winterized for use on low temperatures/snow. Because of their performance on dry roads, they would be my choice if I were driving a two wheel drive car in the UK.

 

The Goodyear Vector 4 season is a American equivalent to the Yokahama  Geolander and won a German magazine allseason tyre test with their Gen 2 version (the price above is for the Gen 1) but the gen 2 is not yet available for XV size as yet.

 

The Nokian Weatherproof won the Auto Express allseason tyre test, similar to the Michelin but the other way round - it is a winter tyre that has had its rubber compound altered for all year use. Its main attributes are its performance in the snow - as you would expect from Nokian, but also had the best aquaplaning performance and had the lowest noise levels in the German test. The price was not high up on my list of priorities when selecting a tyre but you can see the Nokian is, by a considerable margin, the lowest cost tyre.

 

I have decided to purchases the Nokian Weatherproof for my XV which were ordered yesterday from mytyres. I received an email saying that due to high seasonal demand (despite the still very mild weather in the UK!) that it will be 5 day delay in delivery. I think Nokian are onto a winner with this tyre so I am not surprised they are in demand!

 

Will a Nokian/XV combination work? Will let you know.

Tyre update:

The tyres were ordered on the 14th Nov from mytyres. After the order was made they informed me that the expected delivery date was 26^th Nov! which I was not happy about (found out later that mytyes is a German company and tyres order in the UK have to come from Germany). They actually arrived on the 19^th Nov delivered direct to their local tyre fitting agents but when I went to have them fitted, the tyre fitting company refused to fit the tyre because they needed “vouchers” from mytyres to cover fitting cost! It was left to me to sort out via email and phone calls to get hold of the vouchers to get them fitted a couple of days later!!

Based just on price, mytyres could not be bettered but their customer service leaves a lot to be desire (like the German supermarkets!). Personally, I would not use mytyres again; I would rather pay a bit more for good customer service.

 

Back to the most important bit - The Tyres: The Nokian Weatherproof look great on the XV, on driving the first thing I immediately notice was reduced noise levels, the feedback through the steering wheel felt a bit vague at low speed to start with but after they scrubbed in the handling is as good if not better than the Geolanders. I have covered about 1000 miles and I have found them to be very sure footed in the dry and in heavy rain. I have yet to try them in mud and snow but with snow forecast this week maybe I will have a chance to give them a good “snow” test.

After my 4 wheel alignment ( another post ) I have also had some new Nokian Weatherproof tyres fitted to my xv

yes they do look good on the car but very early days so will keep this post updated :-) with how they get on

shame there is no real bad weather listed for this area but it's only January so there is time :-)

I bought some firestones from my tyres .com they delivered them to the wheel refurbers within 2 days and i didn't pay for fitting . As I got them fitted once the wheels were finished for free as it was included in the refurb price [emoji41]

I am interested. Can you kindly inform me of the tyre size and tyre ratings Nokian weatherproof that you bought. Was it the SUV or passenger car because I have difficulty locating 225/55/17. 97v in Nokian Weatherproof SUV.

Whilst other tyres are cheaper, marginally. I'm on geolanders and they've still got 3-4mm left on them and they've done 45,000 miles. So worth considering that you may only get 25000 out of set that's £100 cheaper, in which case that's not economical.

i'll be sticking with geolanders. Also our tyre specialist advised that the tyre was designed specifically for the car, They're also very sure footed in snow and ice.

yes I found the same but found them poor when stopping in the snow and ice, so hoping these will be a better all round tyre in them conditions as they are rated better for that.

so far I am finding them very good especially in the wet conditions

time will tell :-)

You'll have to post up, I personally found the geolanders to be pretty good in snow and ice even stopping. With the mileage in getting out of mine I'm reluctant to put anything else on, so to 46k miles on the original set of tyres. So far actually on my XV I've replaced no parts yet that would usually have worn by now, no pads, discs nothing. Quite a cheap motor to run.

Well, I've contacted our local tyre supplier, he's come back with a really good price for the Geolandars for an XV. £109 a corner fitted and balanced etc, over £100 cheaper than I have been quoted elsewhere. 

My wife is changing her rear tyres now at 45k, I'm at 48k and will probably have to change my rears at 50k, pretty good tyre wear for a 4x4. Fronts got a few thousand left in the must I reckon.

should you not be changing all 4 at the same time? I thought there was a tolerance they had to be within

Main dealer doesn't think there is any reason why you shouldn't replace fronts or rears at different times, it can alter your mileage, fuel economy accuracy etc I guess. The only thing I can think it would affect is the 4x4 system if it thinks the front or rear wheels are slipping, but not seen anything about it.

You are supposed to put new tyres on the rears rather than the fronts though, I know that much, something to do with stability.

I did think I might just bite the bullet and do all 4 as they're all pretty worn now.

Great info on the tyre subject. I was wondering if you noticed any difference on your mileage after the change to the Nokia's?

it is to do with the 4x4 system there is a page in hand book about it. something like you have to use all the same type / make of tyre and the tread has to be within a

certain mm of each other or you can damage the  Symmetrical 4 wheel drive out of whack.

I guess its early to tell but I have done 2.5k miles on them and they are like new also I have not seen any drop or gain in mpg

if they are as good in summer months as winter there on to a winner because using them in snow, ice and water has been very very positive indeed. no issues in getting about and very planted on the road.

As I only do 5k a year on mine, I wonder if there is a recommended age change point, as they will not be worn out for 8 years, at this rate! I know I had to change a couple of tyres on the van, as they were showing tyre wall cracks, and they had only done 30K in 5 years.

Not sure, generally as long as they're big parked in the sun for weeks at a then they should last years, it's the UV that knackers them
