cragsmythe
Hi all, hope I'm posting in the right place? I have posted previously about my first Subaru wrx 2.5 07 plate. Bought end of September. Only had it 2 weeks before it went back for head gaskets!! Got it back after 2 weeks and a supposed full rebuild. Okay until December when just routinely decided to check oil and the dipstick was dry! Took almost full 5 litres to get back to full mark, all this after only doing about 500 miles since the rebuild. Phoned the garage back up and to be fair they were okay about it and said to take car back. Now it is a bit of a trek back to where I bought it so asked if I could take it to a local garage for their opinion as its still under warranty. Actually took it to a couple. Both said fill it up and run it keeping an eye on oil level. One said they may have forgot to fill it up when they fixed it. Find that hard to believe. Anyway, been checking it regularly and noticed it going down again, to the point where its nearly all gone after only 500 miles. There is no visible oil leak or patch where its parked and no smoke coming from exhaust. What should the garage be checking for?? Love the car but is it time to give the keys back and buy another. tom_gr7
I can't help with the actual problem mate, however, live up your way mate and i go on a trek to sheffield subaru service, when i need some work doing or whatever. i'd certainly recommend having a chat with him if you are planning to keep the car. martyc
The oil can either leak or be burnt, so if it's not leaking it's consuming the oil somehow. Common faults are the turbo or pistons/rings. I'd personally take the car back if it's using that much, unless it's fixed free under warranty it's going to prove to be expensive Sent from my iphone using Tapatalk
Steveuk260.Esq
Yes definitely have them fix it under warranty. There is something called pcv valve but I can hardly believe it would be using as much as you say. cragsmythe
Thanks for replies. Car going back tomorrow. Their mechanic doesn't believe it either, especially as its not smoking!

cragsmythe
can see them trying to fob me off!! They have phoned and said there's no leak. Which I knew. Now he's already saying a litre of oil per 500 miles is acceptable without investigating further. Seen on this site that 1000 miles per litre is what should be expected minimum. Scoobyghost
Wow, my car is on 170K miles I had a rocker cover leak and I doubt I even used 200ml between a service of 4K miles. You'd clear the sump in 2500 miles with his logic. Have you wrote them any letters regarding the issue? Best start a paper trail. Sounds like its gonna be a long one. cragsmythe
only done 62000, had head gaskets replaced on 60000 under warranty. They still have the car at moment. See what they have to say later but getting ready for a fight.
GeoffLeggy
Using a litre of oil every 500 miles is a lot to me. The mileage/wear cant be high enough for that sort of use! What did they actually do as a full rebuild? Is there a possibility this couldve been an issue before and linked to the head gasket issue? You would expect to see white smoke if it was something serious (Ringland) but you say your not getting anything
Tidgy
subaru seem to say that 1L every 1000 miles is the concern point, so your well over that :( When they say it was rebuilt, exactly what did they rebuild? did they just swap out the headgaskets or was it a full strip down crank up rebuild? (which on a 2.5 with headgasket failure is the only option i would accept)
cragsmythe
Definitely not smoking. Could've been an issue from before as I only had the car a fortnight before it went back for head gaskets! Couldn't say exactly what was done on rebuild as only spoke to them on phone. New gaskets, timing belt, tensioners. He said it was stripped down and rebuilt but just have his word for that.
Tidgy
You say you've done 500 miles since it was rebuilt, has it been run in? aka has it been running without boost?
cragsmythe
you've lost me thereTidgy? Done about 2000 miles since gaskets replaced. Nothing mentioned about any running in or anything when I picked it back up!
Tidgy
O dear, that might explain it. When an engine is rebuilt it needs to be run in before boost is applied to allow the engine to bed in. Typicly its to let the pistons rings to properly bed into the bore. If you wern't told it needed running in then i expect that maybe where your problem lies. Could do with getting it to a specialist to get it checked out (leak down, maybe get a camera into the cylinders to see for any damage), but i suspect damage is prob alredy done :( Personally i'd be looking for a refund.
Scoobyghost
I'd doubt they even done the bottom end by the sound of it. Doesn't detract from a running in period though. You are still covered by sales of goods and services act. You need to start a paper trail, recorded delivery letters.
cragsmythe
doesn't sound too good then. If that is what's maybe happening would it not be smoking from exhaust?

GeoffLeggy
Put it this way, I had a broken ring on my 2.3 Mazda 6 and there was no smoke at all until heavy acceleration and even then couldnt notice it while driving. That was going through a lot of oil too!!
cragsmythe
They did decide on Friday that it was burning oil. Engine coming back out and getting stripped as they don't know where from!
GeoffLeggy
Interesting! Least they are tackling it which is great news for you Taking bets on what they find?
Scoobyghost
Good news for you. Keep up with them on it and ask for an engineer report at the end describing what they found to be at fault.

cragsmythe
ahh you've got to laugh, or I'd cry! They will have had the car 3 weeks on Tuesday. Todays excuse was they are waiting for head gaskets that they had to order from America! Going to try and speak to citizens advice bureau tomorrow. Proper mickey take now.
