davievtec
Hi folks I have just been told that I have a sigma ac110 alarm system on my car and thats why my key fob is different and that would be why I have 2 alarms sounding when my Battery dies lol... does anyone else have this alarm system and can tell me details on it if its thatcham approved ect and also will this lower my insurance ? Any help would be greatfull thanks
dogma1
I can't really help as I am crap at this sort of stuff. but I know that the early impreza had a recall for the alarm as it was a fault with freq if you parked near a POLICE STATION or RADIO MAST the alarm would not turn off and you had to push the car away from it to get in and on AWD that's a job in it's self. On insurance I always state that it's factory fit as the messing about has never saved me that much as once I stated I had a cobra on my uk turbo and they wanted the certificate and I could not find it so I had to restart insurance and they charge me £40 for the problem. I later worked out the saving and it was £20 so I now just say factory fit.
Gambit
I think they are classed as Thatcham approved, but I know my Insurance's wanted to know the make and at the time I couldn't be arsed :D So just went with the factory fitted as well. And I'm not really tunned up at all with the alarm systems I have a like my Bugeye works fine with the Fob but if I use the the Key it messes my Immobiliser up :(
davievtec
Ahh I was thinking of telling my insurance that I have a cat 1 alarm but I dont wanna mess around and try and remove my alarm and fit a new one especially when my car is in a locked garage away from home aswell im only 24 years old with 0 no claims as I havent had a full insurance policy for over a year since I have went through 7 cars since last feb and had all different policies since some wouldnt insure me on some of the cars I have owned lol so any little discount helps especially my advanced driving takes £200 off the insurance even at that its still over £2000! Just a cost I dont wanna spend hence the reason im doing all my mods just now and making a build of it until im 25 in march
Miggs
They all come fitted with a cat 2 from the factory, that's the immobiliser, if you tell the insurance it's been upgrade to cat 1, alarm and immobiliser, they will ask for the receipt from the fitter, 50% of Thatcham approval is actually the fitter, they have to be approved by Thatcham themselves If you contact http://www.scorpionauto.com/sigma.htm they may be able to help as they are as far as I know the biggest sigma approved sellers

Just a cost I dont wanna spend hence the reason im doing all my mods just now and making a build of it until im 25 in march Wow over £2000 pounds most my insurance has ever been was nearly £800 and that was with an old car that was highly modded and street parked not in a garage with a high crime rate area :o ( I think people used to think I was a drug dealer so they left it alone) :) Right if that's the case then Miggs I'm going to take my cars back they both said cat1 alarms when I bought them I feel like I've been missed sold them ;) Only good alarm I ever had funny enough was on the car I was just on about had a Clifford put init never really looked into them I always think if there is a good one on the car as a deterrent it keeps the average car thief away, if they really want to get it they will. I remember reading in the paper a guy who had just a crap escort car. He had bolted it to the ground on the drive way alarm on it a wheel clamp steering wheel bar/lock and one that went on the hand break and locked gates. Yes it got nicked :D I'm sure it was only done to prove a point but has always made me believe if they really want it they will get it. shame the insurance don't see it like that but what can you do :D
Miggs
Try doing a quote with the car in the garage, then do the same quote with it out of the garage, mine dropped a few hundred when I took it out of the garage, if the car is hidden away a car thief can take his time, if it's out in the open he's got to be quick so as not to be seen With regards to alarms, car thieves will just walk away when they see a Clifford light flashing as it's one of the hardest alarms to get past, but that said they are the ones most prone to random alerts The only steering lock I can't get past is the full disklok, the easiest is the ones that feed through the wheel and clamp at the top, took me 5 seconds to get that off, twist and it snaps open, the disklok is the only Thatcham approved steering lock available As for cat 1 and cat 2 Cat 2 is just an immobiliser, factory or otherwise Cat 1 is alarm and immobiliser factory or otherwise If you have just an immobiliser and you go to an alarm fitter they will upgrade to what they call a cat 2-1 basically adding an alarm to be integrated to the immob, mine has the factory immob and then a second immob and alarm on top of that, I have the factory immob light flashing in the clocks, alarm light flashing in the window and second immob flashing in the glove box Wheelclamps are quite easy to get past, especially the ones Joe public can buy, the handbrake locks just take a quick whack on the lock with a hammer and they come undone, and the first 5 years of after market immobilisers the were available could be bypassed by towing the car up to 30mph and bump starting it
Gambit
Oh ok yeah have alarm and immobiliser on them both think one of the guys said it was cat1 Thatcham approved so guessing it was sort of miss sold. Or I was trying to blag my insurance company I can't remember Haha it was awhile ago now ;) Both only flash near the clock on the dash when it's on. And I know what you mean with the Clifford the amount of times I would go running out the house in the middle of a swingers get together party in full leather bondage gear and a !Removed! in hand because the alarm was going off just got frustrating :D
dogma1
I know I went to get the certificate and they were charging £80 just to look at the car and they said if it was not working right they would charge for repair as they would not just give the paper bit. davievtec
Ahh yeah my car is actually in a garage away from home and when my Battery dies then I charge it 2 alarms go off on my car thats why I am asking about them lol and I think I will have the sigma one removed and a clifford one installed so when the sigma one is out anyone is welcome to have it lol
Miggs
Gambit, there are alarms that are Thatcham approved that you can buy and fit BUT the insurance company won't recognise the fact it's Thatcham approved unless a Thatcham approved installer fitted it, if you have a receipt then chances are you can find if the installer was approved by searching them on Google, insurance companies have them all on record so will know when you send them the receipt and discount the policy accordingly Davie, instead of a Clifford I would go for a viper, they are both made by directed audio but viper is the us version, the viper comes with a 2 way remote lcd pager so if your alarm goes off your fob goes off to tell you and you can control it from the comfort of your home (if your within the reach of it) if you have a turbo timer or remote start or plan on fitting them I suggest you clarify with the insurance first as some don't like them and will put your policy up, if you are wanting them and don't want insurance headaches then either Clifford or viper can be added to at a later date so the receipt won't state the add ons for insurance
Gambit
well after reading davievtec is paying over £2000 I'm paying a hole lot less then that I think I will leave it as it is :D I will check the paper work see if there is anything about it in there I've not looked at it for that long I'm not 100% what I've done with it now :D
Miggs
I was quoted nearly that for an import classic, I'm paying less than £500 on a UK classic, it's nuts, I once got a quote for a Toyota hilux surf, 3.0td import on an M reg, that was £1600, yet a porsche 997 was £900 Juat a shame I can't afford the actual car lol
davievtec
Ahh ok I wont be using a turbo timer as I always let the engine warm up and cool down before and after I drive my cars always have with my turbo cars, I can get insured on a lamborghini gallardo cheaper than my subaru especially when I will only be using the subaru for shows and a weekend car it will barely get drove as I have a second car I can also insure my mates e60 m5 cheaper than my subaru lol ive not had any crashes and have a clean lisence
Miggs
Have you tried specialist companies, I get mine cheap as I have a classic policy that limits my driving to 5k miles a year but if I decide to go over that I can just ask them to extend the mileage, there's loads of companies out there that will give cheap quotes, some like Adrian flux will lower the cost of the policy based on the money you have spent on mods, things like halfrauds rims and £2.99 body kits don't count but if you plough as much into the car as it cost in the first place they know your going to take care of it more
Jay762
You can get discounted insurance from Adrian flux by being a member of this forum http://uk.subaruownersclub.com/forums/topic/544-up-to-15-off-your-scooby-insurance/
Gambit
2nd Jays comment had good feed back from them from other members some Scottish toffee bloke I can't remember his name. ;) he saved loads well worth a try :)
davievtec
I tried Adrian flux and they want 2300 for me to be insured n I would prefer a policy that if I do end up doing 10,000 a year I can without any extra fees because I might end up taking the subaru to the nurburgring next year or cote de azure with my friends I aim to have the car in such a way as it has the power when I need it but is still comfortable to potter up and down to asda in, also miggs wgat do you mean about a discount with the modifications that get done to my car ? Like alarm systems and fuel cut switches ? As far as I was aware any company will frown upon you if you put performance enhancing parts onto your car as they see it with a set of brakes "why do you need bigger brakes are you going to be slowing down from a high rate of speed quickly" ? Or am I not understanding what you mean mate ?
Jay762
the insurance companies that look at mods positively and forum club membership relates to recognising an interested enthusiast who spends time and money taking care of his / her car and therefore are more likely to take more care driving it. bigger / more effective brakes can also be an advantage whilst driving legally in a residential area if a youngling chases a ball out in front of your car - it can be looked at both ways
davievtec
I understand what you mean now thanks mate I will look into that and see what insurance companies think, thanks mate
Miggs
Yeh what jay said lol, its hard sometimes to get a point across on the net, it sounds great in ones head but might only sound good to that individual
davievtec
I just called the insurance company and said that I was part of this club and they want way over £3000 for me that's atrocious as my mk4 golf gti turbo was 350bhp and could insure that for under 1200 I cant understand how a uk spec car can be so high on insurance especially when i haven't crashed in the past 5 years looks like the car will be put in storage until march and that should give me from now until then to do what I can to it and mot it and tax it in march
Jay762
!Removed! ell thats diabolical - really dont understand how it is that high
davievtec
I know i dont have a clue why its so much and thats me myself on the policy as my mum and step dad bring it up looks like I will put it through my buisness and run it that way as its alot cheaper than 3000 lol
Miggs
Traders policy will probably be the cheapest option, all the cars I have had each time I add the wife to the policy it drops, did it with the scoob and it went up 200, and that's me with 10 years no claims and the wife with 8, also I'm 36 and she's 32 so it's not like we're teens lol
